Season 2 of Netflix’s Emmy-winning comedy Russian Doll is arriving on April 20th, and its latest trailer reveals that instead of sticking Natasha Lyonne’s Nadia Vulvokov in a fixed loop of one moment in her life, she’s being transported all across the timestream via New York’s subway system. The clip establishes the new time-hopping plot — which Lyonne’s wisecracking lead succinctly summarizes as “I broke time” — through a series of anachronistic train rides, first into the 1980s and then further into a long-buried history of a family losing their fortune on a more antiquated locomotive. Though the connection between…

A colorized image of Cassiopeia A based on data from the Hubble, Spitzer and Chandra space telescopes. (Image credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech)A powerful shock wave traveling through a cloud of gas left behind by the explosive death of a star has a bizarre quirk: Part of it is traveling in the wrong direction, a new study reveals. In the study, researchers found that the shock wave is accelerating at different rates, with one section collapsing back toward the origin of the stellar explosion, or supernova, in what the study authors call a “reverse shock.”  Cassiopeia A is a nebula, or gas cloud, left…

Clemson University researchers have discovered a genetic variation associated with an often deadly esophageal disorder frequently found in German shepherd dogs. German shepherds are predisposed to congenital idiopathic megaesophagus (CIM), an inherited disorder where a puppy develops an enlarged esophagus that fails to move food into their stomachs. Puppies with the condition regurgitate their food and fail to thrive, often leading to euthanasia. While German shepherds have the highest incidence of the disease, other breeds are susceptible, too, including Labrador retrievers, Great Danes, dachshunds and miniature schnauzers. Researchers do not yet know if the same genetic variation is involved in…

It’s old hat by now to say “you are the product” on social media. Often, that bon mot is used to explain why social media is free to access. But that’s just barely scratching the surface. After all, this idea of intangible goods, bound up in the self, didn’t even begin with the internet, but with the 20th century turning our very psyches into a strip mine. Today, we’re not just eyeballs delivered up for advertisers, we are the Main Character of the internet’s deepest libidinal needs: the day’s villain, hero, romance interest, or incomplete story. Ed Sheeran “neither deliberately nor subconsciously copied” the British songwriter Sami Chokri to write his superhit “Shape of You,” a British judge ruled today (April 6). The judge said there was “no more than speculative” evidence that Sheeran had heard the song. After the verdict, Sheeran said on social…

Superconductors — metals in which electricity flows without resistance — hold promise as the defining material of the near future, according to physicist Brad Ramshaw, and are already used in medical imaging machines, drug discovery research and quantum computers being built by Google and IBM. However, the super-low temperatures conventional superconductors need to function — a few degrees above absolute zero — make them too expensive for wide use. In their quest to find more useful superconductors, Ramshaw, the Dick & Dale Reis Johnson Assistant Professor of physics in the College of Arts and Sciences (A&S), and colleagues have discovered…

Many of us have heard of probiotics but don’t necessarily know what we should be doing with them, or how they work.First up – probiotics are good for gut health, but why is that important? Your gut isn’t just the place where food goes, it’s actually at the center of all body systems and its health can influence everything including immunity, mood, physical and emotional health. In fact the gut microbiome and the brain are in cahoots – constantly talking and firing messages back and forth. Number theorists are always looking for hidden structure. And when confronted by a numerical pattern that seems unavoidable, they test its mettle, trying hard—and often failing—to devise situations in which a given pattern cannot appear. One of the latest results to demonstrate the resilience of such patterns, by Thomas Bloom of the University of Oxford, answers a question with roots that extend all the way back to ancient Egypt.“It might be the oldest problem ever,” said Carl Pomerance of Dartmouth College. The question involves fractions that feature a 1 in their numerator, like 1⁄2, 1⁄7, or 1⁄122. These “unit fractions” were especially…
