Hi Joey! Thank you for speaking with me today!
Thanks for inviting me to chat!
Congratulations on releasing your cover of Jingle Bells! What was the most fun part of the process of covering that song?
Well, anytime I get to make music with my friends Miguel Castro and Nester Jaenz, it is a good time! But I also love that I brought back a verse last heard, to the best of my knowledge, in the 1940’s during a live Christmas broadcast by the Glenn Miller orchestra!
I was also excited to partner with Darren Melchiorre to provide the cover art! He is a great friend that is able to express visually what I am saying musically. A great service as I am blind and that ain’t my thing LOL.
When you’re not feeling motivated how do you get back on track?
I honestly live for time with friends and family and to make music, so I am almost always motivated, but on the rare occasions that I feel a bit weary, I just tell myself that I have a job to do and get on with it. I find the best way to break out of those times when one is not inspired is to listen to music from other artists you really love and that will put you in the mood, or even better to collaborate with an artist that is outside your comfort zone. This forces you to think in new ways and usually gets rid of any block you might be feeling artistically!
How much do you believe LUCK plays a role in success?
Hmmm, good question. There is an element of things beyond your control, so from that standpoint, I guess you could call that luck, but I believe in making my own luck and the best way to do that is to be where creative things are taking place and to network, network, network!
There is a great quote from a book called “The Kid Stays In The Picture”. It is,”Success is when opportunity and preparation meet”! I think that is the answer, hard work and doing all you can to be where things are happening. And if your town doesn’t have that, you create it!
What are you hoping to work on or accomplish as we approach the new year?
I am trying hard to finish up a few last things for my 2022 album “One Song At A Time” and also a very special collaboration with a dear friend of mine, more on that next time LOL, but I have so much to get done before spring of next year. I have a live album recorded in 2019 and the very beginning of 2020 that needs mixing and another jazz fusion album that needs some overdubs and mixing, though that one probably won’t be ready until 2023 for several reasons, not least of all the special guest artists I am lining up to take part!
Do you have any holiday shows coming up?
I am doing a Facebook live concert at www.facebook.com/joeystuckey on 12/3 at 7pm EST. It will last about an hour and is a lot of fun. It features myself on guitar and vocal, Charles Arnold on percussion and Brian Bogle on sax. We’ll tell a few stories and play some great tunes, including my version of “Jingle Bells” and my Christmas original “A Santa That Plays Guitar”.
Please let everyone know where to keep up with you and your music!
