Creating an inspirational vibe through harmonies has been at the foundation of gospel music for generations, and in his new single “Where Have the Heroes Gone,” singer/songwriter Ryte EyE Ty delivers a truly fine example of using the concept for material outside of the faith-based canon. “Where Have the Heroes Gone” uses a formidable lead vocal to lead its charge towards optimism, and despite utilizing a rather familiar song structure, it has the look and feel of something that is coming straight from its composer’s heart. I like this balladic sound Ryte EyE Ty is employing, and I could get used to it as both a fan and a critic.
For as grand a melodic fabric as “Where Have the Heroes Gone” enjoys, it’s a rather conservative offering on the instrumental end, leaving us with the girth of the lead vocal controlling far more of the tempo than percussion or the piano does. The chorus is the only juncture of the track where Ryte EyE Ty allows himself to get indulgent with the hook in what feels like one of the more passionate displays of strength he’s offered us in the studio thus far, and given how well he does here, I think it’s entirely justifiable.
The percussive componentry behind Ryte EyE Ty is quite crisp and clean in comparison to the monstrous beats I’ve been hearing from some of his contemporaries in the past year or so, and quality production isn’t the only reason why. The drums are never given a chance to overtake this vocal – the spotlight belongs to my man from the get-go in “Where Have the Heroes Gone,” and one could even make the argument that it would transpire the same way on the stage, taking into account how much of a presence this singer has regardless of the venue he’s in.
This is a pretty slick hook, and although it’s a little more progressive than what I usually like in this kind of a composition, it doesn’t throw everything into such avant-garde territory as to distract from the real message of the lyrics. Ryte EyE Ty is the kind of player who doesn’t have to lean on heady virtuosities to make a point to the audience, but he also isn’t scared of using whatever tools are right in front of him, compositional or otherwise, which is one area where I wish some of his less than brilliant rivals would try and catch up.
Ryte EyE Ty’s charisma is absolutely unstoppable in “Where Have the Heroes Gone,” and if this is the sort of content that I should be expecting to hear out of his discography in the future, his time in the headlines is only getting started this spring. I had already heard a couple of tracks from this artist ahead of this most recent release, but the growth he’s exhibiting is a lot more profound than what I had initially been expecting. “Where Have the Heroes Gone” is driven by passion, and I have a feeling it’s just a sliver of what Ryte EyE Ty can muster in the right scenarios.
