Debuting on April 1, 1997, the Pokémon anime has gone on to become one of the biggest anime shows in the history of television, with its success internationally acting as a large reason for the growth of anime outside of Japan. Pokémon has so far aired more than 1,100 episodes in total, and has produced several spin-off series, including Pokémon Chronicles, as well as a variety of films, with Pokémon: The First Movie – Mewtwo Strikes Back and Pokémon the Movie 2000 still ranking as the first and third highest-grossing anime films ever in the United States.
