Supergirl’s Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score Tells a Very Different Story Than Critics

The Rotten Tomatoes audience score for DC‘s Supergirl has surfaced following its theatrical release. It paints a completely different picture from critical perception, effectively creating a sizable divide between the two parties of viewers.

Audiences and critics are split on Supergirl

Critics and audiences seem to be polarized when it comes to their views on Supergirl. Overall, the former is apparently not too fond of DC’s latest offering, as reflected in the mediocre 58% rating assigned on Rotten Tomatoes.

However, the audience apparently has a more favorable view of the film, indicated by the not-so-stellar but robust 77% score on the review aggregator. Most enjoyed everything offered, with some even recommending it.

Reviews for the film are largely mixed, with Milly Alcock‘s performance singled out by some as the redeeming element. Ben Wasserman of Film Forward shared that the actress managed to pull together the DC film’s “underdeveloped ends” to craft “something reasonably engaging.” He added that it is “rough around the edges,” especially when it came to making the worldbuilding interesting. Wasserman continued, “Nevertheless, the hero at the heart of this story is still worth rooting for, even if the complete package never quite reaches ‘super’ status.”

Meanwhile, Eddie Harrison of Film Authority praised the characters, deeming them “undeniably fresh, gritty and commendably brisk.” However, he opined that the film did not have enough material to grant it “more than elementary pass marks.”

ComicBookCast2, who had high hopes for the movie before its release, slammed it, calling it a “super disaster.” He said it failed in two areas — making the character “interesting” and properly adapting the source material, Tom King and Bilquis Evely’s Woman of Tomorrow.

However, Matt Morrison of SuperHeroHype viewed Supergirl positively. In his review, he said that it improved upon the source material and made “a better-paced and more engaging story.” Giving it an 8/10 grade, he called it “a good movie overall and a worthy DCU entry.” Supergirl is currently playing in theaters. Craig Gillespie directed from Ana Nogueira’s screenplay.
