Mariah Carey famously operates in her own orbit, so it’s hardly shocking that she only recently learned about Katy Perry’s brief flight into space. A dispatch from a passionate grassroots project over in Finsbury Park. ‘Diversity’ and ‘inclusion’ have become corporate buzzwords, vibe-free boxes to be ticked on BFI funding application forms, so it is an experience to be reminded that these words represent an ideal that does exist. Collective Film Festival London – the inaugural one-day fiesta which took place on 18 July at Collective Acting Studio in Finsbury Park – was an antidote to business-driven festivals. Researchers tested a sticky hydrogel by using it to glue a rubber duck to a rock in the oceanHao Guo, Hongguang Liao and Hailong Fan A rubber duck that was stuck to a seaside rock for more than a year has proved the strength of a new sticky material. DOI: 10.1093/aob/mcaf126 A new paper in Annals of Botany indicates that pollination can have a dramatic effect on how plants grow and change. The study shows that when plants and pollinators become uncoordinated, even for a brief time, they can change who reproduces best and change plant diversity. The paper offers new insights into how evolution works in real time. Pressures on pollination behavior can fluctuate over reproductive seasons, influencing which plants and animals pollinate. Changes in the interaction between plants…

The reality is there are franchises that people get deeply attached to, franchises that they love and cherish and, yes, do want to see more movies from. Whatever its truth, it would produce dark matter that does not interact with ordinary particles and significantly modify our modern view of the cosmos.New Theories Suggest Dark…

For many millennials and Gen Z cinephiles, Mark Waters’ Freaky Friday is a cornerstone of early 2000s cinema. The third adaptation of Mary Rodgers’ 1972 novel of the same name, this Y2K outing starring Disney icon Lindsay Lohan and scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis uses its central body-swap premise as a means to explore generational misunderstandings and the tunnel vision that comes from being stuck in your own perspective. The film resonated with both mothers and daughters thanks to its unexpectedly nuanced portrayal of the trials and tribulations faced by both parties, surprising empathy and canny comedy. Add to this the film’s respectable box…

Microbes might find energy in surprisingly inhospitable placesublic domain sourced / access rights from The Book Worm / Alamy Rocks fractured by earthquakes could unlock a wide menu of chemical energy sources for microbes living deep underground – and similar processes could potentially support microbes within other planets. “This opens up a whole new set of metabolisms,” says Kurt Konhauser at the University of Alberta in Canada. All organisms on Earth use flowing electrons to power their lives. On the planet’s surface, plants harness sunlight to produce carbon-based sugars, which animals like us eat. Then electrons flow from the carbon…
