Shinji Mikami Hopes an RE4 Remake Would Have a Better

Even though Resident Evil 4 is widely regarded as one of the greatest games of all time, it does sometimes draw some criticism in one area: its story. Some enjoy its campiness, while others hold it up as the weakest part of the action horror shooter. Director Shinji Mikami, who left Capcom a few years after RE4 came out, seemed to agree and hopes that a remake of the game would fix that shortcoming.

While speaking to VG24/7, Mikami, when promoting his upcoming game Ghostwire: Tokyo, talked about the rumored remake and his thoughts on the original story. He also said he only had three weeks to write it, insinuating that the strict deadline kept it from being all it could be.

“It would be great if Capcom could do a great job and make the story better, and put out a good product,” he said.

All the talk about a Resident Evil 4 remake is mainly rooted in rumors, but convincing ones. A leak from November 2020 listed Resident Evil 4 Remake as one of Capcom’s upcoming titles. The leak is full of all sorts of unconfirmed games, as it had Capcom’s roadmap for the next few years. However, it was accurate in a few spots, mainly in talking about the Resident Evil 4 VR game that released in 2021, details on Resident Evil Village (including a fairly accurate plot synopsis), and a PC port of Monster Hunter Rise, all of which eventually came true. It also mentions Street Fighter 6 releasing in Q3 of 2022, which is probable given how Capcom hinted that a reveal was coming sometime in that very same year.

The leak gives credence to the existence of a Resident Evil 4 remake, as well as Capcom’s own history with remakes. The first three numbered Resident Evil games have been remade, leaving RE4 as the next likely candidate. Video Games Chronicle also reported in April 2020 that Capcom had greenlit an RE4 remake. It will allegedly be led by M-Two, the studio headed by former PlatinumGames CEO Tatsuya Minami, and co-developed by parts of the Resident Evil 2 remake and Devil May Cry V teams, making it a bigger project than the prior two Resident Evil remakes. According to the report, Mikami has given the project his blessing and is offering “informal advice” on the game’s direction but declined to lead it himself because of his involvement in Ghostwire: Tokyo. He also told IGN in June 2020 that he would be fine with a remake as long as it “turns out good.”
