On Friday, the 51-year-old English writer-director Alex Garland’s new movie, Men, opens in theaters. Garland’s not a celebrity auteur on the scale of your Martys, your Quentins, your PTAs. But for folks obsessed with twisty, discomforting, finely calibrated sci-fi, a new Garland project is a very big deal. Men, about a grieving widow stuck in some bucolic horror, is already being rapturously reviewed.I happen to consider myself a Garland Head. I fell for him after 2007’s Sunshine, a very underrated Danny Boyle flick about a bunch of doomed astronauts (they gotta nuke the sun!) for which Garland wrote the script.…

The oldest shoe in Norway — a 3,000-year-old bootie from the Bronze Age — is just one of thousands of ancient artifacts that were recovered from the country’s melting mountain ice patches in the past two decades, according to a new report from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).Unlike objects trapped in acidic soil or beneath gargantuan glaciers, the artifacts recovered from Norwegian ice patches are often found in impeccable condition, showing minimal decomposition and deformation, even after thousands of years of frozen slumber. That’s because ice patches are relatively stable, unmoving and free from corrosive compounds. Perfectly…

What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Shadow: Run, but you can’t hide? Shadow is the second book in The Storm Series. I ended the first book, Storm, with a lot of unanswered questions and I know this annoys some people, but I like leaving readers with a cliffhanger. I’ve always been curious about past lives and reincarnation, along with what the government doesn’t publicly disclose to its citizens. I took all of those aspects and incorporated them into the story where the main character has the ability to remember his past life. Even though some…

It’s probably game over for The Flight Attendant. Kaley Cuoco, who headlined the first two seasons of the HBO Max hit, has revealed the series is unlikely to return for a third season. “We did two — we should probably be done,” the star and EP told People.com. “I think I’ve been outnumbered with that thought; there’s definitely interest in doing a third season. I think for me, at this moment, the plane has landed.” While Cuoco is closing the door on the series, she believes it could return years down the line. “Some of my favorite shows on TV…

The overarching mood of autumn/winter 2022’s fashion trends can be summed up in one word: nostalgia. Now, nostalgia comes in many different forms depending on your age, experiences and interests. Whatever you might associate with happier, simpler times has likely been translated to the runways for the upcoming season because the creative collectives in New York, London, Milan and Paris have all been feeling that desire for a better life. Designers powered through the past two pandemic years with optimism, channeling their energies in quite literal pick-me-up trends such as dopamine dressing—a hashtag that continues to garner attention on almost all social platforms—but with the…

What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Alondra? I wanted to continue my series [The Hawthorne University Witch Series], but I was looking for something different. I always found Cadence’s teacher and mentor, Alondra, mysterious and captivating in my series. The problem was that, whereas Cadence was an outsider to witchcraft, innocent and uncertain about her magic, Alondra was a full-fledged powerful witch. So, to give the prequel a similar flavor as the series, I felt a need to change the POV. Alondra is narrated by her love interest, Liam. Finally, I delved headlong into the…

IN DECEMBER 2009, a submarine plunged 2,000 meters into the Gulf of California and emerged clutching a whole new branch of life. The deep-sea craft hadn’t uncovered a new species of fish, or some hitherto unknown crustacean, but something much more profound. In one of the most alien environments on Earth, the submarine had found a group of microbes utterly distinct from all other life. In animal terms, it was like stumbling across mollusks or insects for the first time. Not just one new species but a whole swath of life had swum into focus. This might sound momentous. It is…

That includes more than 4,000 children who were hospitalized and nearly 290 kids who received care in an ICU. Five of the affected children were placed on mechanical ventilators for breathing support and two children under…
