Amnesia: The Bunker Announced, Takes Horror Series into Semi-Open World

It has only been about two years since Amnesia: Rebirth. However, Frictional Games has just announced another new entry in the series called Amnesia: The Bunker. This horror game got its first trailer and is coming out on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC in March 2023. No PS5 port was mentioned, however.

The trailer sets the tone by showing lone character wandering around in a bunker with a revolver while unknown noises echo within its concrete walls. Players inhabit the boots of an amnesiac French World War I soldier stuck in the titular bunker while being chased by an “otherworldly monster.” This beast constantly hunts players and seems comparable to the Xenomorph in Alien: Isolation and can be roughly seen in its key art.

This seems to translate to the other parts of the game since Frictional notes that The Bunker is mostly made up of unscripted scares and derives its tension from the aforementioned monster. Puzzles, obstacles, and the game’s tasks can also all be solved in different ways and it’s up to players to choose what is best for them. However, these choices can have consequences, which can “change the outcome of how the game responds” and “[force] players to create new strategic paths in every playthrough.” And since so much isn’t scripted, objects, threats, and resources will change from playthrough to playthrough.

Despite being in a bunker, the game’s setting is a semi-open world where users can explore freely and are encouraged to experiment with its emergent gameplay elements to get ahead. The Bunker arms its protagonist with a revolver (which is a first for the series) and dynamo flashlight, but it’s not clear what those other emergent tools will be.

This is the fourth Amnesia game, but only the third one Frictional has created. While it made Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Amnesia: Rebirth, Dear Esther developer The Chinese Room developed the second entry, Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs. Frictional published A Machine for Pigs presumably while it was working on Soma, another well-received horror game.
