What is a mock-neck jumper? I hear you ask. Well, let’s start with what it’s not. A roll-neck (or a turtleneck, as they’re known in the U.S.) typically has just that—a roll neck, a portion of fabric on the neckline that folds back on itself to create a double-layer effect. Most roll-necks sit under the chin, even when doubled over. Of course, thicknesses vary, and you can choose whichever one speaks to you. Still, generally, I find a large percentage of roll-necks come up too high and feel somewhat suffocating on my petite frame—especially the fitted iterations. As for my bust?…

Despite concerns raised by Weaver and others in the field, fire suppression became a cornerstone of forest management. And at first, coinciding with a relatively cool, wet period, it seemed to work. Fires across the American West were limited and generally controllable. For about 50 years, this fire regime was presumed to be normal. The main goal of the forest service during this era was to support the timber industry and, for decades, it thrived in a stable, fire-free environment. Forests were first cleared of old growth, because large trees made more money than small trees. New-growth trees were then…
Hedy Lamarr, born Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler, was a Hollywood movie star who acted in dozens of films, most notably Algiers, released in 1938 and Samson and Delilah, in 1949. Alongside her acting career, she was also an inventor, working on everything from the shape of aircraft wings to dissolvable drink flavourings. Most of her inventions were not widely used, but in the 1940s she wanted to create something that would help Allied forces fight the Nazis as part of the second world war – Lamarr, born to a Jewish family in Austria, fled to the US after the country was…
Not everyone in a band will always share respective views, but within Korn there’s a definite respect amongst each other when it comes to having certain views. Metal Hammer recently reached out to their readers for questions for Jonathan Davis, and one of the queries that came back was a question about where or not Davis had been to church with his Christian bandmates Brian “Head” Welch and Fieldy.Davis responded that while he had not joined them at their respective churches, he had been to church and he respects their beliefs. “The world would be a much better place if…

The relentless evolution of the COVID-causing coronavirus has taken a bit of the shine off the vaccines developed during the first year of the pandemic. Versions of the virus that now dominate circulation—Omicron and its subvariants—are more transmissible and adept at evading the body’s immune defenses than its original form. The current shots to the arm can still prevent serious illness, but their ability to ward off infection completely has been diminished. And part of the reason may be the location of the jabs, which some scientists now want to change. To block infections entirely, scientists want to deliver inoculations…

NASA and the German Aerospace Center are permanently shutting down the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA), a telescope on an aeroplane that has been scrutinized for years for its high cost and low scientific output. Since 2014, the observatory has made hundreds of flights above the water vapour in Earth’s atmosphere to get an unobscured view of celestial objects and to gather data at infrared wavelengths. SOFIA has measured magnetic fields in galaxies, spotted water on sunlit portions of the Moon and detected the first type of ion that formed in the Universe, helium hydride. But it costs NASA…

As Russia’s full-scale war in Ukraine heads towards its hundredth day, opposition from Ukrainian forces is as strong as ever. At the same time, hacktivists all around the world continue to breach Russian institutions and publish their files and emails. This week one hacktivist collective took a different—and slightly peculiar—approach: launching a service to prank-call Russian government officials. The new website uses leaked details to put two random Russian officials on a call with each other. It obviously won’t make any difference to the outcome of the war, but the group that created it hopes the tool will cause some…
Researchers at the University of California San Diego have developed a smartphone app that could allow people to screen for Alzheimer’s disease, ADHD and other neurological diseases and disorders — by recording closeups of their eye. The app uses a near-infrared camera, which is built into newer smartphones for facial recognition, along with a regular selfie camera to track how a person’s pupil changes in size. These pupil measurements could be used to assess a person’s cognitive condition. The technology is described in a paper that will be presented at the ACM Computer Human Interaction Conference on Human Factors in…

Carbon monoxide is an odorless and colorless gas made when fossil fuels burn incompletely. It’s also a silent killer. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), more than 400 deaths and 20,000 emergency room visits can be attributed to carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning every year. While CO detectors and making sure your fireplace and heaters work correctly can help prevent exposure, treatment options are limited for those suffering from CO poisoning. That’s why Tim Johnstone, an assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry at UC Santa Cruz, has been working to develop an easy-to-administer antidote. “If you are exposed to…

Model of EV-mediated V30M-TTR cell deposition in ATTRv amyloidosis patients, compared to processes in healthy controls. Credit: Kanazawa University Amyloidosis is the collective name for a group of diseases characterized by the deposition of amyloids—insoluble proteins that form due to the misfolding and aggregation of soluble proteins—outside of cells. Such depositions lead to cellular dysfunctions, and take place in patients with Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and dementia. In the disease called hereditary (variant) transthyretin amyloidosis (abbreviated ATTRv amyloidosis), variants of the transthyretin (TTR) gene lead to TTR amyloid deposits in several organs, with symptoms including muscle weakness and cardiac failure.…
Arcade Fire brought the confetti for their celebratory performance of “Unconditional I (Lookout Kid)” at the 2022 Juno Awards on Sunday. Watch the performance below. The Canadian collective played the latest single from their sixth album WE sans the swaying, inflatable dancers that debuted at Arcade Fire’s surprise Coachella set and were later showcased in the song’s music video. But their ebullient and unpredictable energy remained as the band charged through a spirited rendition. Instead, the group was joined by a percussion section of precocious youngsters who not only brightened the stage with beaming smiles but also drove home the…
From a thorn in Chief Brody’s side to a real life Chief Brody. The immortal classic Jaws was set on the fictional New England island of Amity, but the movie was mostly filmed on the real New England island of Martha’s Vineyard.
