“Missing You Underneath the Mistletoe” by Dianña

Dianña, also known as DianñaCountry, will make a big impact over the holiday season with her seasonal song “Missing You Underneath the Mistletoe”. It’s a personal song for the performer rather than just an attempt to cash in on the ever-present hunger for such songs during this time of the year. She began writing the song ten years ago during a period of personal distress but failed to finish it. It is when she made the decision that she wanted to attempt recording and releasing a Christmas track this year that she decided to pull the song back out and found, now at a much happier place in her life, that she finished it with ease. It’s wonderful that she did.

It has an almost dreamlike feel the way that the arrangement carries listeners through the song. The piano playing, percussion, and light instrumental touches joining them are perfectly orchestrated without ever striking a false note along the way. It’s marvelous to hear how the transitions between passages are handled with such ease and the gentleness emanating from the track will draw many listeners in. The song, as well, never overstays its welcome. It has a message to deliver and doesn’t attempt to revel in any sort of self-indulgence.

Dianña’s vocal is what sells the song, of course. She never rushes the lyrics, taking care with each word, and she sounds well in tune with the arrangement throughout the song. Her vocal approach was inspired, at least in part, by the vocal stylings of legendary Karen Carpenter, well known for her interpretations of traditional Christmas material. She has a heavyweight voice, there’s no question she could blow the doors off of this tune at any moment she chooses, but instead she is attempting to weave a spell and succeeds in the largest way possible.

Her lyrics for the song are equally moving. The song begins in a place of loneliness and longing that is plain-spoken, never ostentatious, and the language remains every bit as direct as the song progresses. There’s a strong storytelling aspect to the track that many listeners will enjoy. The song’s accompanying video is fantastic as well. Directed by Fonco Studios impresario Fon Davis, the backdrop has meticulous detail without ever seeming false and it is apparent a great deal of thought went into the video before filming. This is anything by a fly by night production and seems anything but indie.

That’s because Dianña is a major league talent. This is a career to watch, it has been going on a little while, but she is building the sort of resume that will attract new fans by the score. She has the sort of inviting grace that encourages listeners to keep coming back and “Missing You Underneath the Mistletoe” will be, in the end, one of the most pivotal moments in her blossoming recording career. Anyone who loves deeply felt songwriting will love “Missing You Underneath the Mistletoe” and pine for more.
