Emma Chamberlain. Photography courtesy of Getty Images As new platforms emerge, the world of influencing continues to mutate. By Natalie Michie Date June 1, 2022 On a recent episode of her podcast, Anything Goes, YouTuber turned fashion influencer Emma Chamberlain predicted a “cultural shift” in the realm of internet fame. Her argument: because everyone is trying to be an influencer, the industry has become less exclusive and, in turn, less credible. But was it ever credible to begin with? The idea that a person of influence could be used to sell us something is not new. Back in the 18th…

Credit: Wikipedia Global supply issues related to the pandemic and war in Ukraine have highlighted yet another global vulnerability: food availability. While international trade allows countries to buffer against domestic food shortfalls and gain access to larger markets, what happens when supplies run short, or the global supply chain slows or even breaks down like it did during the pandemic? A new University of California, Davis, study sheds light on how trade, and centrality in the global wheat trade network, affect food security. The study shows that many countries depend on trade to fulfill their food needs. Further, the global…

What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Orenda – Curse of Immortality? My mother and co-writer jokes that I will come out of the shower with an entire story plot. However, it’s not far from the truth. I experience my plotting almost like info dumping. Meaning that I’ll receive ideas for a complicated trilogy in a matter of minutes and then as I sit down and write down the plot more details emerge. It’s an incredible gift that I’m deeply grateful for. If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Orenda –…

Large-scale agriculture in the Brazilian Amazon. Credit: Erika Berenguer A major study into landscape changes in the Brazilian Amazon sheds new light on the many environmental threats the biome faces—but also offers encouraging opportunities for ecological sustainability in the world’s most biodiverse tropical forest. The study’s findings are critical because as the Amazon moves closer towards a ‘tipping point’, they provide a robust evidence base to inform urgently needed conservation and regeneration priorities in the forest. They show that gains can be achieved through a range of actions—including, but not limited to, halting deforestation. The research, which is published today…

Astrophysicists have developed the first 3D simulation of the entire evolution of a jet from its birth by a rotating black hole to its emission far from the collapsing star.Simulation shows that as the star collapses, its material falls on the disk that swirls around the black hole. This falling material tilts the disk, and, in turn, tilts the jet, which wobbles as it struggles to return to its original trajectory. The wobbling jet explains the longstanding mystery of why Gamma-ray Bursts blink and shows that these bursts are even rarer than previously thought.Because these jets generate Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs) —…

A TV version of Field Of Dreams was set up to start production over at Peacock, but unfortunately, it seems the streaming service won’t be moving forward with the show after all. The TV series would also be co-produced by The Gordon Company, who was behind the original film. The TV series was supposed to be…
What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Accidental Oligarch: A Ukrainian Saga? I founded a non-profit called Internews 40 years ago, and with our partners we train journalists in more than 100 countries. Ukraine was one of the first and our longest-running program. We essentially developed the first generation of independent media in the country after independence in 1991. I’ve been impressed with Ukrainians for years. And, the timing of this book’s publishing came right at the start of the 2022 war with Russia. All proceeds from this book I am donating to Internews to…
It turns out, Peacock is switching everything up when it comes to Love Island. With a new home, a new filming location, and even a new narrator, many questioned whether Arielle Vandenberg would return as host. We now have our answer… Peacock revealed Thursday that Modern Family star Sarah Hyland will be hosting the new season. It is a bit of a shocker when you consider how well Vandenberg was received, but it does…
African wild dog pups. Credit: Bobby-Jo Vial As climate change alters environments across the globe, scientists have discovered that in response, many species are shifting the timing of major life events, such as reproduction. With an earlier spring thaw, for example, some flowers bloom sooner. But scientists don’t know whether making these significant changes in life history will ultimately help a species survive or lead to bigger problems. A study published the week of June 27 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences shows for the first time that a species of large carnivore has made a major…

Researchers from The Australian National University (ANU) have found an alternative explanation for a mysterious gamma-ray signal coming from the centre of the galaxy, which was long claimed as a signature of dark matter. Gamma-rays are the form of electromagnetic radiation with the shortest wavelength and highest energy. Co-author of the study Associate Professor Roland Crocker said this particular gamma-ray signal — known as the Galactic Centre Excess — may actually come from a specific type of rapidly-rotating neutron star, the super-dense stellar remnants of some stars much more massive than our sun. The Galactic Centre Excess is an unexpected…

Growing up, finding yourself, learning what role you want to play in the world — it’s a process I wouldn’t exactly want to relive in the full intensity of when it happened, but it’s certainly also a precious phase of life that I treasure. I definitely don’t seem to be alone in this opinion, since coming-of-age stories remain universally and perpetually popular. And they’re especially popular in manga. The best coming-of-age manga capture this time in all its beauty and emotion and drama…

CLIMATEWIRE | New policies established by the Federal Emergency Management Agency aimed at helping individuals qualify for disaster aid have resulted in nearly 100,000 people receiving assistance who would have been ineligible previously, FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell said yesterday. FEMA last summer expanded the types of documentation that people can use to show that they live in an area that was declared a federal disaster or own a home that was damaged in a disaster and are eligible for cash assistance, hotel stays and other emergency aid. The expansion was designed to help low-income and minority residents, who are more…

Sylvan Esso have officially entered a new era. Following the release of their thematically intertwined first three albums, the electronic duo are ready to move on with the new single “Your Reality.” In a statement, Amelia Meath and Nick Sanborn described Sylvan Esso,What Now, and Free Love as a trilogy. With the triad complete, “Your Reality” allowed Sylvan Esso to push past their established sound in order to see “how weird we can take it,” as Sanborn said, “How bare and strange something can be.” As such, the single bubbles with intricate percussion as Meath ponders the state of the world. “Were there…
This year marks the 50th anniversary of Pong appearing at a local bar near Atari headquarters and breaking down repeatedly because the coin mechanism was too full of quarters. It wasn’t the first video game, but it was the one that broke the floodgates and created the gaming industry as we know it today. The current Atari doesn’t have a large connection to the innovative company of the past, but they have brought on the archival specialists at Digital Eclipse to create a 90-game collection that will let players everywhere experience the full history of gaming’s first first-party publisher. Atari 50: The Anniversary…

Nice to see so many folks coming back over to the Darth side. After decades of derision for the Star Wars prequels, Hayden Christensen is finally feeling the love. Thanks to Disney+‘s Obi-Wan Kenobi, which reunites the Canadian actor with on-screen buddy Ewan McGregor for an epic six-part second round, Christensen is currently killing it, mostly in the show’s flashbacks to his pre-Palpatine Anakin Skywalker. And let’s face it, there was no way this show was going to work without these two crossing paths — and lightsabers — again. “I thought it was so exciting,” he recalls of the first…
Kids under five years old have just become the last age group made eligible for a COVID vaccine in the U.S. A Food and Drug Administration advisory committee voted 21 to 0 in favor of authorizing the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for children aged six months through four years and authorizing the Moderna vaccine for those aged six months through five years. The FDA’s Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee’s decision reflects a consensus among the panel’s health experts that the vaccines’ benefits outweigh the risks for the littlest children. The FDA had concluded, based on its own analyses, that both…
