In one way or another, Thomas Gooch has spent more than 30 years struggling with illegal drugs. The 52-year-old Nashville, Tenn., native grew up in extreme poverty. He was first incarcerated in 1988 and spent the next 15 years in and out of jail for using and selling narcotics. “Until 2003,” Gooch says. “That was the first time I went to treatment and the last time I used.” Since then, for most of 19 years, Gooch has been trying to get others into recovery or just keep them alive. He handed out clean needles and injection-drug equipment—which reduce injuries, infections…

By Natalie Michie Date December 20, 2022 This article was originally published on December 9, 2022. Update: On December 19, SZA pushed back on the characterization of her songs as “sad girl” music. “Ignoring songs like Sos, Psa, concieted, low, forgiveless, seek n destroy, notice me, or ex pack … to pretend I only make sad girl music is dumb,” she wrote on Twitter. In a separate Tweet, she questioned why she can’t be perceived to have “a FULL spectrum of emotions,” instead…
Tesla is under criminal investigation in the US over claims that the company’s electric vehicles can drive themselves, three people familiar with the matter said. The US Department of Justice launched the previously undisclosed probe last year following more than a dozen crashes, some of them fatal, involving Tesla’s driver assistance system Autopilot, which was activated during the accidents, the people said.As early as 2016, Tesla’s marketing materials have touted Autopilot’s capabilities. On a conference call that year, Elon Musk, the Silicon Valley automaker’s chief executive, described it as “probably better” than a human driver.Last week, Musk said on another call Tesla…
Polyphia’s “Playing God” is Loudwire’s pick for the 2022 Song of the Year. Guitarist Tim Henson joins us to talk about the massive track, whether 2010 Polyphia would like 2022 Polyphia, his newest signature guitar and more.“Originally, that wasn’t going to be the first song,” Henson reveals about “Playing God.” “The first song was going to be ‘Chimera.’ What had happened was, we filmed this music video that was like, the most money we’ve ever spent on a video. It was really ambitious. It came out not great, and then on top of that, ‘Chimera’ had leaked … When it…

A tube of “fossilized lightning” from Nebraska’s Sandhills holds a rare type of quasicrystal that had previously only been found in meteorites and at atomic bomb test sites. Quasicrystals are materials that break the traditional rules of crystallography. Before they were first reported in 1984, scientists thought materials could either be crystalline — with symmetrical, repeating patterns — or amorphous, meaning randomly arranged and disordered. In addition, scientists believed crystals could only be symmetrical a limited number of times when rotated around an axis — two, three, four or six times. Quasicrystals break those rules. They’re put together in an ordered pattern,…

There’s just something about that brand-new year feeling — new intentions, new calendars, new reading logs, and best of all, new young adult books! I am super excited about this avalanche of 2023 releases, and this January is bursting with so many amazing new books that I’m not sure my TBR can handle it. There is no possible way that I could cover them all, so instead of focusing on the heavy hitters likely already on your radar…
Tough as Nails returns for Season 4 on January 4 on CBS, and TV Insider exclusively debuts a clip from the season’s first challenge above. In talks with Phil Keoghan, the host tells us all about what’s going down in the challenge. “At the very beginning of the season, we have a team-picked challenge,” Keoghan describes. “They’ve never seen each other work before. They don’t know anything about each other. They introduce themselves to each other very quickly and say, ‘I’m a pipeline worker. I’m a firefighter and a veteran. I’m a construction worker.’ And then we put ’em to…
A U.S. company is designing a large battery that it says could help decarbonize the nation’s power sector more cheaply than lithium-ion storage systems—and with domestic materials. The concept, known as the “iron-air battery,” has impressed U.S. experts. Unlike current lithium-ion batteries that require expensive materials mostly from other countries such as lithium, cobalt, nickel and graphite, the proposed battery stores electricity using widely available iron metal. It operates on what scientists call the principle of “reversible rusting.” The low cost and high availability of iron could allow iron-air batteries to store electricity for several days during periods of low…
On her sophomore album Hold the Girl, Rina Sawayama, the breakout British artist known for the mashup style of her 2020 debut—Y2K pop meets nu-metal meets ‘90s R&B—doubles down on her sonic signature. This time, she hones in on the sounds of early 2000s adult contemporary radio, updating them with stadium-sized drum fills and stomping club beats to tell the story of reparenting herself. From the acrobatic “ay-ee-ay-ee-ay” choruses of “Catch Me in the Air” and “Forgiveness” to the acoustic country-pop sweetness of “Send My Love to John” and high-gloss sheen on piano power ballad closer “To Be Alive,” Hold the…

It’s easy to use—place the vial of solution into the reader, swab both nostrils, stir the swab in the solution, snap the vial closed, and push it further down into the reader. After 30 minutes, you’ll see a green light next to the positive or negative label, depending on the result. There’s also a label for an invalid result, which means you should repeat the test. It’s worth noting that even though Lucira is the most accurate on this list…

Transcend by Gladys Mangiduyos What’s it About? Transcend is a book of unique style and structure about overcoming adversity and emerging a better person because of it. How do you transcend adversity? How do you emerge a better person because of it? Gladys Mangiduyos answers these questions in her latest book, Transcend. It’s not quite poetry and not quite prose either; it’s less of a traditional story narrative and more of a string of episodic images and metaphors. It’s the kind of book that’s so unique in style and content that it seems you can only describe it by how…
It would be the understatement of the century to say that changes are on the horizon for The CW. We’ve covered the network’s new leadership and the many cancellations from the previous season. The following essay is reprinted with permission from The Conversation, an online publication covering the latest research. Many people love the holidays because they are a time to make happy memories with loved ones. But what if you could do something that would help restore memories in some of the people you love? Using a process called reminiscence therapy, that may be possible. In reminiscence therapy, elders are encouraged to discuss memories across their lifespan, particularly memories of positive experiences. As researchers who specialize in geropsychology, and in preparation for the holidays, we wanted to explain this technique and encourage readers to use this…
Life is full of decisions. Whilst some seem important but aren’t, like which pizza topping to pick or what colour your next gel mani should be, others, like which watch to invest in, actually take careful consideration. For most, selecting the correct timepieces is a lengthy process as—let’s be honest—they can come with a hefty price tag and are something you want to wear for decades, perhaps pass down for generations and need to compliment all facets of your personal style. When considering the best watches for women, it’s no secret that they’re often not thought of as a quote-unquote must-have or trending piece. Shoes and…
When you hunt the tree of heaven, you come to know it by its smell. A waft of creamy peanut butter leads you to a tall trunk, silvery and nubbled like cantaloupe rind, rising into a wide crown of papery pink seeds and slender leaves. To kill this tree, you cannot simply cut it down with a chainsaw. Ailanthus altissima is a hydra; it counters any assault by sealing off its wounds and sending up a horde of new shoots across its root system. Where you had one tree, now you have a grove of clones extending 25 feet all around you. No,…
As promised, Paramore are now sharing the second song from their upcoming This Is Why album, a new track titled “The News.”As you might gather from the song’s title, Hayley Williams takes a more worldly approach with the lyrics addressing the current state of the world within her vocal take. She opens by singing of a war on the far side of the planet, then turns the “war” idea to describe her inner turmoil going on behind her eyes just like a headache and eventually sounding the call to turn off the news. She belts, “Shut your eyes but it…

If you are a lover of tabletop games, chances are you’ve gone to, or hosted, a game night. They can be so much fun! Everyone gathered around a table with snacks, drinks, dice, games, and friendship. But with lots of people gathered around those D&D tables comes a very challenging problem: space. And to a lesser extent, organization. This is especially relevant with Dungeons and Dragon, where everyone has all their dice, character sheets, notebooks and other D&D accessories. Not to mention the…

Sharing photos and short video clips of herself in a fluffy purple bucket hat and a plunging halter top in magenta and black, she captioned the carousel, “Currently seeking a girlfriend.
