Photography by Getty Images Y2K has finally gone too far. By Natalie Michie Date December 13, 2022 The year is 2005. Bedazzled Motorola Razrs are the definition of high-tech. Destiny’s Child is still together. Disney’s cinematic masterpiece, Ice Princess, has just hit the scene, and young Hollywood royalty is congregating to attend its premiere. Ashley Tisdale emerges onto the red carpet wearing a white graphic T-shirt that reads “Dream Bebe,” a pair of bootleg jeans, and a gold sequined mini-skirt layered over top. Just like that, history is made. What Tisdale didn’t know then (or did she?) is that her…

Generally “bomb” is not a word that movie studios like to hear used in proximity to their productions. But I think Universal will make an exception for Oppenheimer, the next film from Christopher Nolan. For the first time, Nolan has made a biopic (you could say Dunkirk was a historical film, as it is based on an actual battle from World War II, but the characters were largely fictional). His subject is Robert Oppenheimer, one of the key scientists in the Manhattan Project who helped invent the first atomic bomb; Oppenheimer is played by frequent Nolan collaborator Cillian Murphy. The first trailer for the movie began…

The fossilization process is an unrelenting slog of decay, compression and erosion that can take millions of years and favors the preservation of tough material such as bones, teeth and shells. But with a little bit of sticky tree resin and a lot of luck, delicate bits of plants and tiny critters can sometimes last for tens of millions of years. As the resin petrifies and turns into amber, it preserves whatever gets stuck inside of it—including insects, slime molds and even pint-sized dinosaurs—in a gold-tinted time capsule. A team of researchers recently rediscovered one particularly stunning amber inclusion stashed…

A good night’s sleep is vital for optimal health. Not getting enough shut-eye can affect a person’s mood and concentration the next day and it’s been linked to a greater risk of chronic conditions, according to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (opens in new tab). Many factors affect sleep, from a person’s wind-down routine to their environment. But if noise sometimes causes fragmented sleep, some people tout white noise as a potential solution. In theory, this low humming sound can help mask unwanted noises that disrupt sleep, thereby helping people to drift off. Yet research shows mixed results. So…

Dolly Parton has been wearing nude, fingerless gloves for a long time, but the internet has suddenly taken notice thanks to a viral TikTok posted by user hannahbearbraun, which features a clip of the 76-year-old American country star performing at the 37th annual Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. Winter can be really hard to dress for. Your first priority is usually warmth, and for me, comfort comes a close second, with style often taking a back seat. Add on some dark, uninspiring mornings, and my go-to outfits can easily become a combination of the cosiest items I lay my hands on when I first open my wardrobe. I presume I’m not alone in this winter outfit rut, so after recently browsing through H&M’s impressive new-in section, I thought it might be helpful to assemble four ready-made, affordable (but still chic) H&M winter outfits to inspire us all. Whether you’ve got festive events on the brain—from…

Researchers from the University of Birmingham, UK, who identified a novel mechanism for platelet activation in pathogenic blood clotting (thrombosis) are now turning their attention to sepsis. Identified by Associate Professor Julie Rayes and Dr Martina Colicchia from the Birmingham Platelet Group, and described in a recent paper in Blood, this previously unknown axis comprises platelet receptor glycoprotein I alpha (GPIb?), and an anti-microbial protein S100A8/A9, which is released from activated immune cells. The mechanism is not blocked by classical anti-platelet drugs currently used to treat arterial thrombosis, and is distinct from the well-described ‘clotting cascade’ that limits blood loss…
