Didi went public on June 30, 2021, valued at $68 billion. Two days later, on the evening of July 2, the Cyberspace Administration of China, the country’s internet regulator, announced that it was reviewing Didi’s cybersecurity. On Chinese social media, rumors spread alleging that Didi had sold sensitive user information and traffic data to the US, creating a national security risk. Didi’s management denied the accusations. On July 4, the regulator made an announcement claiming Didi had illegally collected and used riders’ personal data, and ordered app stores to remove the app. A year later, the Cyberspace Administration decided that the…

Here’s something else chess players need to keep in check: air pollution. That’s the bottom line of a newly published study co-authored by an MIT researcher, showing that chess players perform objectively worse and make more suboptimal moves, as measured by a computerized analysis of their games, when there is more fine particulate matter in the air. More specifically, given a modest increase in fine particulate matter, the probability that chess players will make an error increases by 2.1 percentage points, and the magnitude of those errors increases by 10.8 percent. In this setting, at least, cleaner air leads to…
Close to a year after Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards, Rock held forth about that on-stage altercation in Chris Rock: Selective Outrage, his live Netflix comedy special. “Y’all know what happened to me, getting smacked by Suge Smith,” Rock said near the end of his hour-long set, which Netflix streamed on Saturday, March 4. “Everybody knows! Everybody f—king knows! Yes, it happened. I got smacked. Like, a year ago … I got smacked at the f—king Oscars by this motherf—ker, and people are like, ‘Did it hurt?’ It still hurts! I got ‘Summertime’ ringing in…
[]A close-up of the mummified bear’s head. (Image credit: Press service of the North-Eastern Federal University)[]A perfectly preserved, mummified bear found entombed in the Siberian permafrost in 2020 isn’t what scientists thought it was, a new analysis reveals. It turns out that the eerily intact carcass is much younger than first assumed and belongs to an entirely different species. []Reindeer herders unearthed the remains, which include the bear’s intact skin, fur, teeth, nose, claws, body fat and internal organs, on Bolshoy Lyakhovsky Island, a remote Russian island located in the East Siberian Sea. Researchers named it the Etherican bear, after the…

Conor Oberst has reunited with his longtime pals The So So Glos. The Bright Eyes frontman features on “Everywhere Is War,” the new single out now from the Brooklyn rockers. Rather than the garagey, surfy punk by which The So So Glos made their name, “Everywhere Is War” is a poppier number primarily backed with a spunky piano riff. It’s difficult to even recognize Oberst’s trademark constantly-on-the-verge-of-tears vocals, too, as it’s been doused in T-Pain levels of Auto-Tune. Soon enough, though, the track has you humming along. But despite its sunny exterior, “Everywhere Is War” has a much darker meaning, its…

Some, like the Asian Lungs or Eastern European dragons, are very serpentine, with long bodies, sometimes with legs, sometimes without. Others are what most folks of Western European descent would recognize: horns, wings, at least two legs, a mouthful of sharp teeth perfect for biting through a questing knight’s armor. Today, we’re looking at some of the most beloved and famous dragons in mythology and literature. Why do we love dragons…
WITHOUT meaning to sound ungrateful, it really is the comedown after the festive cheer: the dreaded thank-you notes. Perhaps you agonise over how to make each sound genuine. Maybe you put off the chore for so long you end up not bothering, or simply feel they are an outdated waste of time. Then there is the skill of mustering the convincing faux-thanks for unwanted gifts. If writing thank-you letters is a task you readily dismiss, you aren’t alone. It turns out we express our gratitude more rarely than you might assume. But, however you feel about those festive notes, it…
Scientists from the Institut Pasteur, Necker-Enfants Malades Hospital (AP-HP), Inserm in the Imagine Institute, Université Paris Cité and the Alfort National Veterinary School (EnvA) have identified a previously unknown species of circovirus, provisionally named human circovirus 1 (HCirV-1). Circoviruses are a family of small, highly resistant DNA viruses that were initially identified in 1974 in various animal species, where they can cause respiratory, renal, dermatological and reproductive problems. HCirV-1 is a novel virus that is distant from known animal circoviruses. It was shown to be implicated in damage to the liver of a patient undergoing immunosuppressive treatment. This discovery of…
After executive-producing several Arrowverse shows and overseeing the CW superhero franchise’s “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover event, Marc Guggenheim didn’t get a place at the table when DC Studios planned a reboot of its cinematic universe. And now, in terms of his career, he feels like he “wasted his time” on the Arrowverse. In a recent edition of his LegalDispatch newsletter, Guggenheim — who was executive producer on Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, and Batwoman — remarked on reports that DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran formed a writers room to launch a new, unified…

No matter what you call it, this going-out trend is not for the faint of heart, and I should know. The style is enjoying a casual resurgence, though adventurous dressers gave the look a spin as far back as 2019, when Hailey Bieber rocked a bold pink gown at the Met Gala and Alexa Demie…
It only took three days of swiping before he popped up. I froze, thumb hovering over the X. I scrolled through his photos and prompts, looking at what he had changed since I’d seen it the first time. The first photo was the same: him holding a climbing rope somewhere remote, curly hair bursting from underneath a baseball cap. His simple pleasures were still “mountain roads, forests and alarm free mornings.” He had added a photo where he stood shirtless at the base of a cliff. The twist of the knife was the note from Hinge at the top: “Most Compatible: We…
Veteran industrial act Godflesh have announced a new album, Purge, set for release on June 9th. The LP marks the UK band’s ninth album overall, and first in nearly six years. Broadrick and Ben “G. C.” Green. According to a press release, “The title alone — Purge — references directly how songwriter and creator Justin K. Broadrick utilizes Godflesh’s music as a temporary relief from his…
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League has taken quite some time to come out. And while it is still officially scheduled to release on May 26, a new report has alleged that it won’t make that date. According to a new report from Bloomberg (which accurately reported on its previous delay), the live service shooter is being pushed from May to some unspecified time later in the year. One of the sources in the article explains that this delay is mostly to improve certain underwhelming aspects of the game and fix bugs. The gameplay itself isn’t being overhauled, as that…
Everywhere I look, people are begging for sad books! They want books to make them ugly cry, books with devastating endings, books that make them cry in public, the list is endless! Some might think it’s strange to willingly submit yourself to something sure to make you upset, but according to VeryWellMind, it’s perfectly reasonable. Sad short stories and novels alike connect us to our real-life emotions in a controlled way. They make us more grateful for our relationships and the meaning we hold about our lives. This is called the “tragic paradox” or the “paradox of tragedy,” the psychological…
A study led by a North Carolina State University researcher found that under more severe climate warming scenarios, the inventory of trees used for timber in the continental United States could decline by as much as 23% by 2100. The largest inventory losses would occur in two of the leading timber regions in the U.S., which are both in the South. Researchers say their findings show modest impacts on forest product prices through the end of the century, but suggest bigger impacts in terms of storing carbon in U.S. forests. Two-thirds of U.S. forests are classified as timberlands. “We already…

The rituals we build around Santa may be more for our benefit than for our children’s©Martin Parr/Magnum Photos ROHAN KAPITÁNY was 7 when he started to question the existence of Santa Claus. Every Christmas, like many Australian kids, he had left out an apple and a carrot for the reindeer and a cold beer for the man himself – and every year, he found half-eaten snacks and an empty glass alongside a pile of presents the next day. But Kapitány had started having doubts. With his scepticism growing, he even hatched a plan to check his parents’ ATM receipts. “That…
“Hate” is a strong word, which is why I never use it lightly. In fact, there are only two instances in which I can say it with conviction. One is regarding bananas. (I’ll never understand how anyone can eat them.) The other? Being cold. I hate being cold. However, one thing I do like is dressing for the cold.Curating an outfit for sub-zero conditions is often regarded as one of the biggest fashion dilemmas going. But with a bit of advice from yours truly, you can take on the elements with all the knack of a pro snowboarder but with all the sartorial…

Before Your Eyes was one of the more surprising games of 2021 and not just a cheap gimmick. Interacting with a story solely through blinking was incredibly novel, and GoodbyeWorld Games used that input method to its advantage to intimately tell a heartwarming (and heartbreaking) tale. And while it was inventive, the PlayStation VR2 port of the game is the best way to play it, as it more aptly realizes the mechanic it was built upon. This is partially because capturing blinks in the other versions of the game wasn’t always consistent despite GoodbyeWorld’s best efforts. Both the PC and…

Former U.S. president Jimmy Carter entered hospice care at his Plains, Ga., home last month. Much has been written about his legacy of stamping out Guinea worm disease, creating affordable housing through Habitat for Humanity and inspiring cancer patients with his own successful fight against metastatic melanoma. Carter may also be the politician who, more than any other, changed the country’s energy future. Under his four years of American leadership, landmark events and legislation opened up a new world of “alternative energy” as a way to wean the country from its troublesome reliance on fossil fuels. Here are seven highlights…
