The Southern Delta Aquariid meteor shower will peak this weekend, but it’s just the first act of a multiweek “shooting star” season, with the best show still a few weeks away.Known for faint shooting stars, the Southern Delta Aquariid meteor shower will peak overnight on Sunday, July 30 through Monday, July 31, with about 20 meteors per hour expected, according to the American Meteor Society. The precise peak will be at 11 p.m. EDT on Sunday (0300 GMT on Monday). However, the Southern Delta Aquariids produce good meteor rates for a week, centered on the peak night. Though they’re popularly called…

That said, this summer I’ve noticed the street style trends coming out of Paris’s Couture Fashion Week are more, for lack of a better word, wearable than ever. Wearable as in you could throw them on to go out for dinner without the risk of tripping up your waiter with a gargantuan train. Instead, I’ve been impressed at the simpler but no-less stylish outfits showgoers have been sporting, and I think you will be, too.First things first, there’s a lot of pink which, let’s face it, really shouldn’t come as a surprise at this point. There’s also a focus on a…
Fruit flies are sensitive to the sight of dead fliesMauritius images GmbH/Alamy Fruit flies exposed to dead flies of their species age faster, and researchers have identified the precise brain cells that respond to the sight of corpses and trigger this rapid ageing, ultimately leading to an early death. Christi Gendron and Scott Pletcher at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and their colleagues have been studying how experiences produce physiological changes that affect lifespan. They originally set out to discover if fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) respond to other flies being ill. “We didn’t see a response until the infection…
Last month, a court in Kenya issued a landmark ruling against Meta, owner of Facebook and Instagram. The US tech giant was, the court ruled, the “true employer” of the hundreds of people employed in Nairobi as moderators on its platforms, trawling through posts and images to filter out violence, hate speech and other shocking content. That means Meta can be sued in Kenya for labor rights violations, even though moderators are technically employed by a third party contractor.Social media giant TikTok was watching the case closely. The company also uses outsourced moderators in Kenya, and in other countries in…

What started as an extremely elaborate joke on a TV show has now, somehow, become an actual stage show — not to mention the first musical from Marvel — playing at one of the biggest theme parks in the world. It’s called Rogers: The Musical and it’s an expansion of the show of the same name that was briefly seen in the opening episode of Marvel’s Hawkeye TV series. In that show, Clint Barton takes his family to see a Broadway musical — which turns out to be a deeply ridiculous show based on the events of the first Avengers movie. While viewers only got a…

Boundaries by Millie by Jo Smoak What’s it About? An adorable donkey named Millie teaches kids a very valuable lesson about boundaries and saying “no.” The purpose of children’s books is to teach kids lessons through entertaining stories at an early age. That way, when they become young adults, they might be able to better navigate some of life’s curveballs. As an adult with young nephews, I am always reading children’s books and wondering about the deeper meaning behind them. Boundaries by Mille by Jo Smoak is here to teach kids (and adult people pleasers like me) a very valuable…

Every 10 seconds, somewhere in the universe, a star explodes. The light from a small fraction of these supernovae—roughly a few hundred per year—reaches us here on Earth to be pored over by astronomers. Studying supernovae is vital to gaining a deeper understanding of the cosmos because they spew forth radiation, dust and gas that help sculpt galaxies, form new stars and planets and enrich the universe with heavy elements. But most are so distant that we can do little more than guess at their exact stellar origins using a handful of hard-won photons to assemble an incomplete play-by-play of…

In the bottom right, a typical modern skink is shown for comparisonKailah Thorn, Western Australian Museum A giant skink with spiky armour and powerful jaws roamed inland Australia until about 47,000 years ago, according to newly discovered fossils. In 2009 and 2013, scientists described two mysterious fossils – part of a jaw and skull – found in Wellington caves in New South Wales. They looked like they belonged to skinks – a type of lizard – but were unusually large. Now, a more recent excavation at the same site has unearthed dozens…
It’s always a pleasure when I listen to three audiobooks close together that happen to riff on similar ideas and themes. I was thinking about transformation and all the ways it manifests in our lives while I listened to Pageboy, and then a few days later I read Chlorine —a book all about a girl who turns herself into a mermaid. This strange and creative take on transformation reminded me of Pomegranate, which I’d listened to a few weeks before. It’s also about a life-changing transformation, though a much more ordinary one. All three of these audiobooks, through very different…

The look, which retails for $945, takes a formfitting silhouette that emphasized the star’s curves, spotlighting her cleavage and toned arms. Thanks to a sculptural wired bustline pinpointed by two pearl beads on each side, the plunge takes…
Here’s how their technology works: Aspia begins by collecting cloud-penetrating radar imagery from the European Space Agency’s Sentinel-1 satellites. Then, their artificial intelligence algorithm, called ClearSky, translates those into optical images, making them easier to interpret. The team trained and calibrated the algorithm using “ground truth” data about real grass heights collected by Origin Digital. People used a tool called a “rising plate meter” to measure the height and quantity of grass in a paddock and converted that into kilograms of dry matter per hectare. This conversion allows ClearSky to turn its grassland images into actionable data in places where…
