Every 10 seconds, somewhere in the universe, a star explodes. The light from a small fraction of these supernovae—roughly a few hundred per year—reaches us here on Earth to be pored over by astronomers. Studying supernovae is vital to gaining a deeper understanding of the cosmos because they spew forth radiation, dust and gas that help sculpt galaxies, form new stars and planets and enrich the universe with heavy elements. But most are so distant that we can do little more than guess at their exact stellar origins using a handful of hard-won photons to assemble an incomplete play-by-play of…

It’s always a pleasure when I listen to three audiobooks close together that happen to riff on similar ideas and themes. I was thinking about transformation and all the ways it manifests in our lives while I listened to Pageboy, and then a few days later I read Chlorine —a book all about a girl who turns herself into a mermaid. This strange and creative take on transformation reminded me of Pomegranate, which I’d listened to a few weeks before. It’s also about a life-changing transformation, though a much more ordinary one. All three of these audiobooks, through very different…

Here’s how their technology works: Aspia begins by collecting cloud-penetrating radar imagery from the European Space Agency’s Sentinel-1 satellites. Then, their artificial intelligence algorithm, called ClearSky, translates those into optical images, making them easier to interpret. The team trained and calibrated the algorithm using “ground truth” data about real grass heights collected by Origin Digital. People used a tool called a “rising plate meter” to measure the height and quantity of grass in a paddock and converted that into kilograms of dry matter per hectare. This conversion allows ClearSky to turn its grassland images into actionable data in places where…
