The robot and human-run plots both contained pairs of eight different common edible vegetables, such as kale, chard and radicchio. Where the…

Temnothorax nylanderi ants may benefit from a tapeworm infectionthatmacroguy/Shutterstock Ants infected with a tapeworm live several times longer than usual. Exactly how the parasite extends the life of its host is unclear, but a cocktail of proteins it releases may provide some clues. The parasite is a tapeworm called Anomotaenia brevis whose main hosts are several types of woodpecker. Ants of the species Temnothorax nylanderi sometimes collect woodpecker faeces and take them back to the nest to feed to larvae. If there are tapeworm eggs in the faeces, they hatch … Read The Full Article Here

The volume required can be huge. In the US, chip fabs use far less water than the agriculture and power generation industries, and semiconductors haven’t spurred political tensions over water resources at national scale, says Chris Miller, a history professor at Tufts University in Massachusetts and author of the recent book Chip War. Still, squeezes have been a concern in TSMC’s home of Taiwan, where droughts have pitted local farmers, who saw their irrigation systems shut off, against the chip maker. Not just any water will do. Just as the air inside a chip fab must be so free from dust…

They’ve made their way from whispered warnings in fairy tales and folklore to the biggest movie screens, and we haven’t gotten bored with their undead antics yet. (Although we could do with more vampires in capes; no one has cool capes in movies these days.)With The Last Voyage of the Demeter offering yet another twist on the vampire genre, we…

Credit: Trinity College Dublin Approximately 99.9% of fish and shark species are “cold-blooded,” meaning their body tissues generally match the temperature of the water they swim in—but researchers have just discovered the mighty basking shark is a one-in-a-thousand exception. Instead, these sharks keep the core regions of their bodies warmer than the water like the most athletic swimmers in the sea such as great white sharks, mako sharks and tuna. The latter examples are so-called “regional endotherms” and are all fast swimming, apex predators at the top of the food chain. Scientists have long reasoned that their ability to keep…

Howard revealed that Starfield had passed 250,000 lines of dialogue, with NPCs emoting as per the tone. In comparison, the critically-acclaimed Skyrim boasts 60,000 lines of dialogue. Howard also hinted at the return of Persuasion, a common conversational tool seen in the classic Fallout and The Elder Scrolls titles. Starfield is slated to launch in early 2023 across PC…

A single human cell teems with as many 100,000 different proteins. Actin is one of the most abundant and essential of them all. This protein forms into filaments that help make up the skeleton of cells, giving them shape. And as the actin filaments elongate, they work like muscles, pushing against the inner membrane of a cell to move it forward. Three other proteins are known to drive the activities of actin. One class of protein assembles individual actin molecules into actin filaments, another causes the filaments to stop growing and a third disassembles filaments. Biophysicists at Emory University, however,…

Sacha Baron Cohen has a few different major comedy personas, but the one that started it all was Ali G. The Ali G character (who’s in-universe real name is Alistair Leslie Graham) was created as a parody of specific types of youth culture in the U.K. at the time. Despite being around since 1998, the character didn’t really take off in a big way until the early 2000s, after HBO began several seasons of Cohen’s Da Ali G Show — which also featured Cohen’s other famous creations, Borat and Brüno.Like most of Cohen’s other characters, Ali G’s humor is mostly derived from his interactions…

An elusive “demon” particle has been observed inside a superconductor nearly 70 years after it was first predicted. Its discovery could help resolve the mystery of how superconductors work. Pines’ demon is a transparent, chargeless particle discovered inside a sample of the superconductor strontium ruthenate. It is a plasmon — a ripple across the electrons of a plasma that behaves much like a particle — meaning it’s a quasiparticle. Theorists think that plasmons may facilitate superconductivity in materials. If physicists are able to find out how, they could use Pines’ demon to shed light on room-temperature superconductors — one of the “holy…

It is compact, travels well, and is fairly easy to clean. To brew a batch, put grounds in the chamber, pour hot water over the top, stir, and then use the plunger to press the coffee out through a flat, circular filter into your mug. It was invented…
