Leave it up to Billie Eilish to go against the status quo with her signature sense of style. On Aug. 15, the 21-year-old continued her obsession with the Y2K aesthetic while performing at the Sziget Festival in Budapest, Hungary. In true Billie Eilish fashion, she took the stage in a black oversize jersey that read “FAMOUS” along with the number 99 and chose the most unconventional bottom — a pair of red mini dolphin shorts layered over see-through black biker shorts and sheer tights. She slipped on red, black, and white striped socks with a classic pair of Air Jordan…

Rick Astley has one of the more deceptively deep voices from the ’80s pop world. Type O Negative’s Peter Steele also definitely thrived in the lower register. But what if you mixed the two together? YouTube sensation Denis Pauna recently experimented with Astley’s signature song, giving it the Type O Negative makeover it so rightly deserves. This gothic Rick Roll is ridiculously good, stripping away the pop sheen of the ’80s hit and dirtying it up with chugging, slow-burning guitar, bass and keys. Pauna showis off his own lower register aping how Steele might have approached it. And honestly, now it’s…

I grew up in a family of secrets that I wasn’t supposed to reveal. Of course, because they made such great stories, I did anyway, but I did it in fiction, writing about my parents, my sister, always changing their names, their appearances. “It’s no one’s business what goes on here,” my mother warned me. My mother was Bea in my first novel, Meeting Rozzy Halfway, an unhappily married woman struggling to raise two very different daughters, and pining away her life for the man who jilted her when she was just 19. She never recognized herself in my books.…

What’s your stance on those long-term questions?AI is one of the most profound technologies we will ever work on. There are short-term risks, midterm risks, and long-term risks. It’s important to take all those concerns seriously, but you have to balance where you put your resources depending on the stage you’re in. In the near term, state-of-the-art LLMs have hallucination problems—they can make up things. There are areas where that’s…

DNA’s 3D shape — its twisted ladders complexly curled into coils and loops — and other features beyond its genetic code may influence where “hotspots” of cancer-causing mutations accumulate. That’s according to a new study of how “genomic topography” affects cancer mutations. Genomic topography broadly refers to elements of the genome beyond the sequence of molecules that make up DNA. That includes variations in how tightly our DNA is wound and which genes are “activated” in different cells. The study, published in August in the journal Cell Reports, catalogs associations between topographical features of DNA and known patterns of cancer-causing mutations across…

Ground-level ozone typically forms when nitrogen oxide emissions from vehicles and industrial processes react with volatile organic compounds emitted from vegetation in the presence…
