Interview with Steven Vance Taylor, Author of The Uninvited

master mentalism tricks

What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write The Uninvited?

Originally, I thought of my time in The Uninvited as “an epic face plant at 100 miles-per-hour leaving a 30-yard skid mark ending two inches short of the finish line.”  A glorious failure. But as I reflected on the 20-year-old events, I quickly realized that everything I am, everything I have, everything I became was a direct result of my friends and I reaching out for something one-inch on the other side of impossible. The Uninvited was not my greatest failure. It was my greatest achievement.  And the book needed to be written.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of The Uninvited, what would they be?

“Is That Me” by The Uninvited. It’s appropriate because I wrote it.

What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love biographies and fictional histories!

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The first chapter when everything is going to hell.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

The book was written primarily in two time slots during the day: before work, 5am to 8am, or after everyone went to bed, 11pm to 2am. If you read carefully you can almost detect the underlying influence: coffee or alcohol.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

A foolish consistency is the hobgobblin of little minds.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Without revealing any spoilers, I would say that I hope people will rethink the scales they use to measure success.
