So great to have you for our interview today. Tell us about your latest release and the impact it’s had on your fans so far?
Thanks a lot for having me! Our last album was released as 10 singles. We released them once a week like a television show. New cartoons on Cartoon Network would come out on Friday when I was a kid and I was always excited about it. We released the whole record like a 10 episode series over the course of 3 months.
The main idea behind putting the record together was to capture the energy of our live performance. We recorded everything live as a band with an engineer that was on the same page as us.
It’s the opposite direction in a lot of ways to our
It definitely contrasted our previous record. The last record championed composition, big harmonies, and melody. It had to be so organized that by the end, I craved chaos.
People that I talk to seem to like the new record a lot. Always a great moment to see anyone singing the words with us at a show. I’ve heard it’s our best work from some. My mom prefers the record before.
We also really dove into making music videos with these songs which has been a lot of fun. We do everything ourselves. From scripts and costume to filming and editing.
Do you get more attached to songs over others?
We have our preferences when it comes to live performance. And new stuff always gets more focus. But all the recorded material is a journal of what I was thinking when I was making the song, putting it together with the group, and laying it down in the studio. They are all nostalgic to me. Being alive is pretty fun.
What makes your Album and the time you spent on the music memorable for you?
We recorded this one as a live band instead of individually tracking the instruments, which is always the preference. Which means we had to have the songs well rehearsed before the date we had booked at the studio. This one was very fun to make. We only allowed ourselves a few takes each song to maintain the raw feel of a performance. Our engineer, Sebastian, was a big influence on this record and came into our lives at the perfect time.
Any tried or true techniques you have when creating the music?
Every record is different. My favorite method is to make a song a day. It takes a stupid amount of time and discipline, but I felt the best as a creator.
When we moved to Austin, I payed my rent off for a year. Every day I woke up, found inspiration, wrote the lyrics and music, made a recording with all the instruments, and went to bed.
My instinct is to dabble with ideas for a while so I had to force myself to make decisions to complete the idea before going to sleep. After a few days, you’re flowing.
What are you most looking forward to in 2023 with your new music?
It feels like a fresh start. We made the last record during covid and live performing was gone.
Since then, we added a fifth member. We just recently started to hash out brand new material together. I’m most excited to get those songs into the set and do some touring in 2023.
Anything in 2022 that you experienced that you’re either leaving behind or bringing with you into 2023?
A fart. A little leaked out in ‘22 but I held the rest in until the ball dropped.
