The solo endeavor of singer/songwriter Lear Mason, Some Days Are Darker illustrates a rich soundscape colored by hues of love, loss, and rebirth, an era-ambiguous amalgamation of goth-rock gloom and modern-day crooner.
With your latest music, what has inspired you to innovate differently?
With Some Days Are Darker I’m always focused on keeping things very authentic and real. Analog even. So I’d say the most innovative work probably happened in the mix and production of the new album. If you listen to Love+Truth, our first EP, things were more bleak. The new music is more colorful, even if those colors are neutrals and metallics. Less black and white.
What tools do you use on a daily basis that apply to your music making?
Small tube amps, vintage Gibson guitars, only a few pedals but lots of reverb. I toggle between a late 70s Rhodes and the piano at times to break the monotony of guitar. I still write my lyrics in a notebook with a pen. Again, very analog. Once we get into the studio I just perform and let the engineers takeover. There’s something about the purity of that process that helps me stay guided.
What do you like to do outside of music that helps the music making process?
I do a lot of photo and video work. That helps to expand the guardrails—to expand the Some Days Are Darker universe into visuals as well as audio.
What creative planning has to take place to prepare you to finally release your music?
I usually just follow the moon cycles.
What are your main sources for industry news to keep you informed on everything that is going on in your industry?
I follow a lot of bands, the clubs I like or the ones I want to play, and a few promoters. I try not to be influenced too much by what others are doing or what the trends are. I suppose some could see that as a fault, but trends come and go. Time passes and the constants stay the same. I suppose that is to say I’m focused on my smaller, short-term goals, like the record release on November 18th, the vinyl release in December, and the upcoming music videos.
