What is the power of performing LIVE?
JOHN: I love people and being around others. So the live experience is great just for that – loving them, and they love you back. When I’m performing with my brothers and sisters, and locking in perfectly with good vibes between the 4 of us , I feel right at home on stage. I like to walk over to Filia sometimes to solo; somehow it makes those solos come out better. I walk over to Evan for the intimate bridges, and look Allan in the eye on those more complex transitions. It doesn’t matter if there are 500 or 5 people in front of us. I get off stage and feel we had success.
Where are you set to perform soon?
JOHN: We have planned our longest tour on the road in a long time. August 17 (Austin) to September 3 (NYC Metro Area). More news to come soon!
How are you performing at your best lately?
JOHN: We learned a lot through our mistakes, and the 4 of us are dividing and conquering in order to set up this tour and release properly. I feel we have better work ethic than ever before and we’re just powerfully moving forward like a machine.
Is there something that you’re performing at your least?
JOHN: I had to put out a lot of fires to make our 2019 tour happen. I had a dream that year: I was fighting some kind of monster or troll who threw boulders at me which I had to dodge (each was big enough to kill me). He taunted me, and was so fast and strong I could not keep up – Eventually he mortally wounded me. Thinking I would die, I somehow found the strength to escape, and the monster let me go! I went to be with my family afterwards, then they looked at me and called me the monster, and rejected me. I didn’t really know what this symbolic dream meant until it, unfortunately, came true word for word. You’ll have to find another interview of ours to see what happened. The point is I feel fear sometimes – there are many things that can go wrong. But this is where I pray and turn it over to God:
Do you ever feel like you lower your expectations when it comes to creating or do you always raise the bar? How does this help you keep moving forward?
JOHN: Never – we’re always raising the bar.
Do you ever look back on what you used to create? Is there a difference on HOW you create NOW?
JOHN: I’m going to reply to your 2 questions with one answer. In the Gospel of John chapter 2, it is written: 7 Jesus told the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” When the jars had been filled, 8 he said, “Now dip some out, and take it to the master of ceremonies.” So the servants followed his instructions.
Everyone knows what happens now – the water turned into wine for the master to taste. – can you imagine how much faith those servants had? How angry would the master of ceremonies be if he had just tasted some water? We’re filling up a lot of jars with a lot of water… Even after all the work we put in- breaking a band takes an act of God. It’s not normal, else everyone would do it. By faith, I continue forward, and believe the plain, ordinary water will turn to wine one day.
You have your album coming out! When are you releasing it?
John: TOGETHER APART will be released April 28.
Give us your favorite line from a song and why it’s so special to you?
JOHN: I have recently listened to “Trials” by Starset.
“These trials make us who we are, who we are, we are”
Same thing on “A new level” by Pantera “unscarred by trials… a new level of confidence and power”
I cannot agree more. – I hope more people can think like this. We get beat down, many times due to our own failures, but one should mature, grow, and instead learn to deny oneself, and be a service to others.
