X-Files’ Gillian Anderson Has Spoken with Ryan Coogler About Reboot

Gillian Anderson has recently opened up about the upcoming X-Files reboot from Ryan Coogler, and whether or not she’ll be involved at all.

What did Gillian Anderson say about the X-Files reboot?

During a recent appearance on ITV1’s This Morning, Anderson was asked about the reboot, and said that she had actually spoken to Coogler about the series. According to Anderson, she praised Coogler, and said that if she’s asked about joining the series, it might work out.

“I spoke to him, and what I said was, ‘If anyone were to do it, I think you are the perfect person and best of luck, call me,’” Anderson said (via Deadline). “At some point, if the phone rings and it’s good and it feels like the right time — perhaps.”

Anderson played Agent Dana Scully throughout the history of The X-Files. She starred in the series alongside David Duchovny, who played Scully’s partner, Agent Fox Mulder.

During a recent appearance on Last Podcast on the Left, Coogler was asked about his plans following the hit horror movie. Coogler surprised the hosts by revealing that the rumored X-Files reboot is next on his plate.

“I’m working on X-Files. That’s what’s immediately next,” Coogler said. “So, I’ve been excited about that for a long time, and I’m fired up to get back to it, and that, you know, some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really fucking scary.”

News of The X-Files reboot first surfaced when Coogler and his production company, Proximity, signed a five-year deal to make television content for Disney’s networks and streaming platforms in 2021.

In 2023, The X-Files creator Chris Carter said that the show would feature a “diverse cast,” and in 2024, he said that he wouldn’t be involved in the show, but would be cheering it on.

Originally released in 1993, The X-Files starred David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as FBI Special Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, respectively. The series focused on the pair as they investigated “X-Files,” which were unsolved cases featuring paranormal phenomena. In total, the series ran for 11 seasons and aired 218 episodes.

By the time it had finished, The X-Files had become the longest-running science fiction series in U.S. television history and was nominated for a total of 62 Emmy Awards, winning 16 of them. The series also spawned a massive fandom — one that still exists to this day and also became a massive influence on future sci-fi projects, including Lost, Supernatural, Gravity Falls, The Visitor, and more.
