The first reactions to Gareth Edwards’ The Creator are calling it one of the best movies of 2023.
The Creator held a press screening on September 18 prior to its upcoming nationwide release on September 29. Initial reactions have been largely positive, with some critics calling it one of the best movies of 2023 so far.
Screen Rant’s Joseph Deckelmeier wrote, “The Creator is a masterpiece & one of the year’s best movies. It hits on so many levels with AI being such a hot topic. Gareth Edwards does a masterful job of keeping the audience engaged every step of the way. Madeleine Yuna Voyles has to be in the conversations for The Oscars.”

Other critics shared similar sentiments. ComicBook’s Brandon Davis called it the “best film of the year and best sci-fi film in ages,” while The Hollywood Reporter’s Brian Davids said, “It’s the culmination of Gareth Edwards’ career so far, and it’s the ultimate version of the type of movie he’s been making since 2010’s Monsters.”
#TheCreator is astonishingly good. Best film of the year and best sci-fi film in ages, in my opinion.
Gareth Edwards flips expectations really impressively for a visceral, touching, and creative story of humanity.

#TheCreator is a massive feat for the sci-fi genre and the all-too-rare original blockbuster.
It’s the culmination of Gareth Edwards’ career so far, and it’s the ultimate version of the type of movie he’s been making since 2010’s ‘Monsters.’

Collider’s Perri Nemiroff specifically praised Oren Soffer’s cinematography, while The Hashtag Show’s Hunter Bolding compared the movie to Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Alien, and Star Wars.
What is Gareth Edwards’ The Creator about?
Directed and co-written by Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’s Edwards, The Creator stars John David Washington, Gemma Chan, Ken Watanabe, Sturgill Simpson, Madeleine Yuna Voyles, and Allison Janney.
“Amidst a future war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence, Joshua (Washington), a hardened ex-special forces agent grieving the disappearance of his wife (Chan), is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war… and mankind itself,” the official synopsis reads. “Joshua and his team of elite operatives journey across enemy lines, into the dark heart of AI-occupied territory… only to discover the world-ending weapon he’s been instructed to destroy is an AI in the form of a young child.”
The Creator hits theaters in the United States on September 29, 2023.
