A paper published February 9 in Earth Planets and Space by Japanese Earth Science researchers analyzed the potential of a dense Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) network, which is installed at cell phone base stations, to monitor crustal deformation as an early warning indicator of seismic activity. The results showed that data from a cell phone network can rival the precision of data from a government-run GNSS network, while providing more complete geographic coverage. Crustal deformation is monitored around plate boundaries, active faults, and volcanoes to assess the accumulation of strains that lead to significant seismic events. GNSS networks have…

The flashiness of VR and AR also obscure the more mundane ways that our existing, interconnected digital world could be improved right now. It would be trivial for tech companies to invent, say, an open digital avatar standard, a type of file that includes characteristics you might enter into a character creator—like eye color, hairstyle, or clothing options—and let you take that data everywhere, to be interpreted by a game engine however it chooses. There’s no need to build a more comfortable VR headset for that. But that’s not as fun to imagine. What’s the Metaverse Like Right Now?The paradox of defining…

What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Breathe? Breathe is the second novel in The Twisted Vines series. The series was inspired by a trip to Napa Valley. During my tours of the vineyards, I kept thinking about life in the valley and what kinds of things could happen in the underground passages. The Twisted Vines series itself centers on a group of hacktivists. In researching the hacking world, I became fascinated by the feasibility of hacking the US power grid, and the life altering implications should that occur. The risk to our power grid comes…

For millennia, cities have thrived by attracting people with diverse backgrounds and talents. But as the world warms, urban areas are attracting something less desirable: heat. A city’s roads, buildings, and other infrastructure absorb the sun’s energy, raising temperatures far above those in surrounding rural areas. This “urban heat island effect” varies dramatically not only from neighborhood to neighborhood, but from block to block and even house to house. Because it’s so hyperlocal and erratic, it’s hard to factor into predictions; a person’s actual experience of heat may be out of step with their local weather forecast. And with climate…

It allows you to do much of your driving without using the brake pedal, although you still need to use it…
