The twists and turns of La Brea Season 1 look set to be amplified on La Brea Season 2. NBC dropped the first teaser for the second this season this week, and it looks like we’re in for something much twistier than before. “Where the hell are we?” Josh utters in the 15-second promo for the sinkhole drama that emerged as a heavy hitter in the ratings last fall. The Sterkfontein cave fill containing this and other Australopithecus fossils was dated to 3.4 to 3.6 million years ago, far older than previously thought. Among the classics—berets, trench coats and ballet flats—lie the subtleties of French dressing that bring the je ne sais quoi, so to speak. Ankle-skimming jeans, pointelle vests and slingback flats are some of the modest heroes that make up the foundations. Although French style lends itself to monochromatic dressing, a French wardrobe is incomplete without an injection of colour, whether that’s via accents on a floral slip dress, a rouge lip or a parakeet-toned dress, like the ones shown below.Wrap dresses, short-sleeve blouses, cropped knits and embroidered stitching are among designs you may associate with French chic. When it comes…

Can you Currently buy a Juul e-cigarette? That depends on what day of the week it is. Earlier this week the FDA denied marketing authorization for Juul, which first started selling its e-cigarettes in 2015 (though it has operated under various company names since 2007). The FDA said the reason for the denial was that Juul “failed to provide sufficient toxicology data to demonstrate the products were safe,” ArsTechnica reports, and as such the agency could not complete its toxicology assessment. The FDA specifically pointed to “potentially harmful chemicals leaching from the company’s proprietary e-liquid pods” as a concern. However, Juul pushed…

It’s been a mild spring in California this year. Breezy days, plenty of sunshine, and 75-degree weather makes me want to spend more time outdoors enjoying it all. While I have numerous reading nooks that I’ve created indoors, I’ve yet to invest in a nice outdoor reading oasis that will invite me (and other bookworms) to spend more time outside. Here I’ve attempted to create an appealing outdoor space for people who want a comfy spot outside to do their favorite thing in the world: read. I figure that a sense of coziness is essential, so some privacy screens or…

Scientists at the University of Bristol have discovered that body size is more important than body shape in determining the energy economy of swimming for aquatic animals. This study, published today in Communications Biology, shows that big bodies help overcome the excess drag produced by extreme morphology, debunking a long-standing idea that there is an optimal body shape for low drag. One important finding of this research is that the large necks of extinct elasmosaurs did add extra drag, but this was compensated by the evolution of large bodies. Tetrapods or ‘four-limbed vertebrates’, have repeatedly returned to the oceans over…

I’m a major fragrance person, and I’m constantly churning through my massive collection of fragrances, and there are some notes that I don’t like on myself but love on others. There is one fragrance note that I think works for nearly everyone, though, and that’s salt. If you think about it, it makes sense—our bodies have naturally occurring salts in them. Salty notes in perfume just help you get that certain je ne sais quoi. People will tell you that you smell good, but…

The United States Supreme Court yesterday struck down Roe v.
