Outfit inspiration can sometimes come from the unlikeliest of places: a curtain fabric at your grandma’s house, a particular shade of green in the local park, a frilly collar on a faded family photograph. But the prints on the seats of the London Underground? That’s a bit of a curveball, even for me. Okay, hear me out. I’ve always loved the geometric prints that covered the Tube, whether it’s the metro tiles lining the walls of Vauxhall station or the colourful moquette checkerboard that covers train seats. There are quiet weeks in the security world, and then there are weeks like this one. Monday kicked off with the Lapsus$ extortion gang—a cybercriminal group so bizarre and with such high-profile targets that some people suspected they were Russian state-sponsored hackers—claiming that it had breached Okta, a popular authentication services company, just hours after it leaked source code for Microsoft’s Bing search, Bing Maps, and Cortana voice assistant. Given that Okta is used by some 14,000 companies, the news seemed “really, really bad,” as one security expert told WIRED. Okta’s fumbled messaging around the incident only made matters worse. Ultimately,…

Watching a boa constrictor capture and consume its prey is quite something. First, the snake strikes and latches onto the prey with its teeth, then it coils its body tightly around the poor creature and slowly squeezes the life from it. The constrictor cuts off blood flow to the heart and brain. Then the boa unhinges its jaw and swallows the prey whole. The boa uses its muscles to move its prey down the length of its body to the stomach, where the unlucky varmint is digested over the next four to six days.Boa constrictors mostly consume various medium-size rodents,…

Paleontologists from a small number of countries control much of the world’s fossil data Credit: Youyou ZhouAdvertisement Rich countries overwhelmingly dominate paleontology research, even when the fossils do not originate there, a new study shows. Researchers analyzed 26,409 paleobiology papers from 1990 to 2020 and found that scientists in high- or upper-middle-income countries contributed to 97 percent of fossil research. And those from former colonial powers disproportionately controlled fossils from their former colonies. Season 2 of Netflix’s Emmy-winning comedy Russian Doll is arriving on April 20th, and its latest trailer reveals that instead of sticking Natasha Lyonne’s Nadia Vulvokov in a fixed loop of one moment in her life, she’s being transported all across the timestream via New York’s subway system. The clip establishes the new time-hopping plot — which Lyonne’s wisecracking lead succinctly summarizes as “I broke time” — through a series of anachronistic train rides, first into the 1980s and then further into a long-buried history of a family losing their fortune on a more antiquated locomotive. Though the connection between…

Clemson University researchers have discovered a genetic variation associated with an often deadly esophageal disorder frequently found in German shepherd dogs. German shepherds are predisposed to congenital idiopathic megaesophagus (CIM), an inherited disorder where a puppy develops an enlarged esophagus that fails to move food into their stomachs. Puppies with the condition regurgitate their food and fail to thrive, often leading to euthanasia. While German shepherds have the highest incidence of the disease, other breeds are susceptible, too, including Labrador retrievers, Great Danes, dachshunds and miniature schnauzers. Researchers do not yet know if the same genetic variation is involved in…
