A new discovery by physicists at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) could make certain components in computers and smartphones obsolete. The team has succeeded in directly converting frequencies to higher ranges in a common magnetic material without the need for additional components. Frequency multiplication is a fundamental process in modern electronics. The team reports on its research in the latest issue of Science. Digital technologies and devices are already responsible for about ten percent of global electricity consumption, and the trend is rising sharply. “It is therefore necessary to develop more efficient components for information processing,” says Professor Georg Woltersdorf,…

Scientists have finally mapped an entire human genome, nearly two decades after researchers first announced that they had sequenced the majority of the roughly 3 billion letters contained in human DNA. Though the Human Genome Project was hailed worldwide when it was completed in 2003, at the time, many sections of the genome still couldn’t be placed. The new work — achieved by a consortium of scientists led by the National Human Genome Research Institute, the University of California, Santa Cruz and the University of Washington in Seattle — finally fills in the last 8% of DNA letters, or base pairs,…

Video games seem utterly terrified to say anything most of the time, as evidenced by developers like Ubisoft and Infinity Ward going out of their way to say that their games are not the least bit political (when they’re not awkwardly backpedaling or coming up with odd, seemingly contradictory definitions). Saying it isn’t political, regardless if it is or not, is usually a weird cover developers or publishers use to not scare off some potential buyers that want the art they consume to be void of meaning. This is what makes the overtly political Road 96 a refreshing experience, even if…

Around the world, between 40 and 50 volcanoes are currently erupting or in states of unrest, and hundreds of millions of people are at risk of hazards posed by these potentially active volcanos. Yet, despite the profound hazards posed to human life and property by volcanic eruptions, humanity still cannot reliably and accurately predict them, and even when forecasts are accurately made by experts, they may not afford ample time for people to evacuate and make emergency preparations. Accurate and reliable predictions have remained an elusive target largely because volcanologists do not fully understand the natural dynamics and processes of…

An extremely rare type of helium that was created soon after the Big Bang is leaking out of Earth’s metallic core, a new modeling study suggests. The vast majority of this gas in the universe, called helium-3, is primordial and was created just after the Big Bang occurred about 13.8 billion years ago. Some of this helium-3 would have joined other gas and dust particles in the solar nebula — the vast, spinning and collapsed cloud that is thought to have led to the creation of the solar system. The discovery that Earth’s core likely contains a vast reservoir of helium-3 is…
