2022 marks the 30th anniversary of Batman: The Animated Series, the landmark cartoon from Warner Bros. that rewrote the rules of superhero animated series when it debuted in September of 1992. After decades of Batman the Super Friend, the guy who hung around with Scooby-Doo, the dude who talked like your favorite uncle, Batman: The Animated Series gave us a Dark Knight who lived up to that nickname. He was grim, he was angry, he always knew how to find a shadow to stand in, and he sounded (thanks to actor Kevin Conroy) like gravel rubbed on sandpaper.Another thing that made B:TAS different from every other previous…

Drugs like enzalutamide that inhibit male hormones from activating the androgen receptor have been used to treat advanced prostate cancer for more than a decade. While successful in most cases, these drugs can eventually stop working, but there is a limited understanding about how this change occurs. A new study from the University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center suggests androgen receptor inhibitors can fundamentally rewire and reshape how prostate tumors function, and in certain cases even make them more aggressive. These findings will be published in Nature Communications on Sept. 15. Male hormones function as fuel, turning on the androgen…

Kate Bush’s “Wuthering Heights” takes the perspective of Cathy, wailing at Heathcliff’s window, The Ramones beg not to live again in their long “Pet Sematary,” a reference to King’s novel of the same name, and there are even entire albums tackling works of literature like Rebellion’s “A Tragedy in steel Part II: Shakespeare’s King Lear” inspired, of course, by King Lear. House of the Dragon’s pace has increased considerably as the season has progressed. Looking ahead to House of the Dragon Season 1 Episode 7, it seems like things are getting gnarly between Rhaenyra and Alicent. Everyone looks set to unite for — spoiler alert — Laena’s funeral, but there’s a lot of angst from many of the characters. Since the original trailer for the series, we’ve known that Alicent would pull a knife on her one-time friend, and it looks like that will happen at the funeral. It does make us question what happens before we get to that point.…

Nothing passes gas quite like a dying star. When a star roughly the size of the sun approaches the end of its life, it expels its outer layer of gas into a bright and beautiful bubble known as a planetary nebula. At the center of each bubble, a weakened star continues irradiating its surroundings, sculpting the gas into colorful shapes that astronomers have likened to crabs, reptiles and terrifying screaming faces. One of the strangest and most baffling of these cosmic cloud paintings is the Cat’s Eye Nebula, located about 3,000 light-years from Earth. Seemingly made of several overlapping bubbles of blue…

Photography by Stéphanie Branchu/Netflix Ahead of season three, we break down Emily Cooper’s style rulebook and how to get the look for yourself. By Natalie Michie Date September 23, 2022 Getting the “Emilycore” look showcased in Emily in Paris is pretty simple: think understated pieces, straight-cut silhouettes and versatile neutrals that capture the essence of Parisian chic. Just kidding. For two seasons, the Netflix dramedy has made headlines for its chaotic, impractical costumes – a reflection of the show’s messy plotlines and clunky clichés. And through it all, the titular lead, played by Lily Collins, has earned a questionable sartorial…

Diatoms are microscopic unicellular algae occurring in natural waters worldwide. During photosynthesis, they take up large quantities of carbon dioxide, the primary greenhouse gas emitted through human activities, and convert it into biomass. The carotenoid fucoxanthin enables diatoms to efficiently harvest the blue-green part of the sunlight for photosynthesis. In collaboration with an international research team, researchers of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) in Germany now discovered how the algae produce this important and widely used pigment. Their work has recently been published in a scientific paper in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). New insights into the…

Erin Moriarty is fed up with the trolling that the fanbase for The Boys keeps throwing at her. It’s extremely unfortunate to hear that so many people are missing the point of the show entirely. It also tackles themes of power, police brutality, white nationalism, and extremist politics. It’s not particularly subtle either. One of the characters is an actual Nazi.Despite criticism aimed toward the very kind of people Moriarty is calling out, people continue to miss the satire entirely. One look…

This then “reverberates down through generations, and not only impacts us, but it impacts our children as well.”Politicians have started to listen. On July 7, Chris Jacobs,…
