Interview with Sharon Ward, Author of Killer Storm

master mentalism tricks

What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Killer Storm?

While I was looking for an idea for the fourth Fin Fleming Scuba Diving book, I was scrolling through old pictures of dive trips for inspiration. I came across an old photo of one of the divemasters at a resort we’d stayed at. He’d been securing the boats ahead of the storm, but the storm had caught up to him. He was running back from the pier, racing to the shore, with the storm nipping at his heels. Instantly, I said “That’s Fin trying to outrace the danger.” You can see what it looks like on the cover of Killer Storm.

What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I love mysteries and thrillers, although I don’t like gore or serial killers. I love female protagonists who are adept at self-rescue.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

Michaels Connolly’s Desert Star, Rhys Bowen’s latest Royal Spyness, and Marc Greaney’s ninth Gray Man novel, One Minute Out.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

The scene with Chico the rooster. You’ll have to read the book to see why it was so much fun, but I really enjoy writing scenes with animals in them. I also love writing the dive scenes.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I like to have my dog Molly beside me or sitting on my feet.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

I’ve always believed it’s better to make a decision and act, than it is to allow yourself to get paralyzed by trying to evaluate all the options. I was recently watching Top Gun: Maverick and the Tom Cruise character says to one of his team members “Don’t think. Just do.” I really liked it, although I think a little thinking before taking action is good. It’s just when too much thinking grinds your process to a halt that it’s bad.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

Fin puts family and friendship above business. She treats everyone the same, regardless of their “status” and I think we should all strive to emulate that attitude.
