Credit: Olin Feuerbacher / USFWS How the Devil’s Hole pupfish has survived for centuries in a spalike cistern cloistered by a barren rock mountain in Death Valley National Park remains a biological mystery. The world’s rarest, most inbred fish clings to existence in the smallest geographic range of any vertebrate: the shallow end of an oxygen-deprived pool 10 feet wide, 70 feet long and more than 500 feet deep. In early 2013, its numbers plunged to 35, and biologists feared the species long regarded as a symbol of the desert conservation movement would be gone within a year. But since…

More new human cases of monkeypox have been identified worldwide, with dozens reported in the U.K. alone. The increase comes after previous evidence had suggested there was unknown transmission of the monkeypox virus within the country’s population, according to the U.K. Health Security Agency (UKHSA). Monkeypox is thought to originate in rodents in Central and West Africa, and it has repeatedly jumped to humans. Cases outside Africa are rare and have so far been traced to infected travelers or imported animals. On May 7 reports surfaced that a person who had traveled to the U.K. from Nigeria had contracted monkeypox.…

Galileo Galilei was the founder of modern physics. To assess such a claim requires that we make a giant leap of the imagination to transport us to a state of ignorance about even the most elementary principles of physics. Today, the simple laws of motion as defined by Isaac Newton, for example, are known to the most modest students, yet Galileo spent his life unravelling these mysteries. His many discoveries include the law of inertia later used by Isaac Newton as the first law of motion, the parabola as the path of a projectile, the relationships between distance and velocity and between distance…

There’s a lot of discussion in our year of the Lord 2022 about what books are “appropriate” for children to read and which can be potentially damaging. I understand parents not wanting to be forced to have conversations they find difficult with their children. I also understand parents wanting their children to remain innocent of some of the horrors that adults have to deal with. I do. I get it. I understand these points of view; I just think they’re wrong. The disconnect for me comes here: preventing kids from learning about bad things doesn’t prevent them from experiencing or…

Every year, I devour most anticipated book lists from publications like Lit Hub, TIME, Vogue, Book Page, Buzzfeed, and more. I can’t get enough of them. My preorders always skyrocket late in the year when these start to come out, much to my wallet’s chagrin. But recently, I’ve seen some chatter on social media saying most anticipated book lists were often exact duplicates for the subsequent best-of book lists at the end of the year. Wrapping up a season in a satisfying fashion is difficult, but HALO Season 1 Episode 9 was a decent attempt at laying the groundwork for the future. We’ll start with the Makee of it all. Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins take their skin care seriously — in fact, the marine mammals medicate their skin by rubbing up against certain types of corals and sponges, which produce compounds that may help guard the dolphins’ skin against infection.Scientists first saw these dolphins scraping their slippery skin against corals about 13 years ago, in the Red Sea off the coast of Egypt. It was then that a team of researchers — including Angela Ziltener, a wildlife biologist at the University of Zurich — spotted the dolphins gliding toward and nuzzling against a bush-like coral species known as gorgonian coral (Rumphella…

Let’s say—just for the sake of argument, of course—that you hate yourself. Given this, three specifics about your life may be assumed. One is that you nostalgize a certain period of your past. High school, college, whatever—you miss it. Another is that, seeking to relive those glory years, you pursue sensory regressions, usually some combination of ice cream, pizza, and computer screens, with shameless, sticky-fingered immoderation. Finally, you either haven’t seen, or did see and greatly hated, last year’s most catastrophically misunderstood box office bomb, The Matrix Resurrections. These things are, quite painfully, related.
