A 4-billion-year-old piece of Earth’s crust the size of Ireland is lurking beneath Western Australia, new research finds. This piece of crust is among the oldest on Earth, though not the oldest. That honor goes to rocks of the Canadian Shield on the eastern shore of the Hudson Bay, which have been dated to 4.3 billion years old. (The Earth is 4.54 billion years old.) Because Earth’s crust is constantly being churned up and pushed back into the mantle by plate tectonics, most of the planet’s rocky surface was formed within the last couple billion years. However, the oldest crust that has…

Photography by Gotham/GC Images Potato sack, but make it fashion. By Natalie Michie Date August 26, 2022 For me, larger-than-life slouchy boots are kind of like horror movies. When I see them, I can’t look away. And out of fear, I respect them. But that doesn’t mean I have to like them. Naturally, seeing these bodacious boots back in vogue leaves me with mixed emotions. Rihanna was the first to mark their return. On a recent outing with partner A$AP Rocky, the beauty mogul donned a pair of massive denim heeled thigh-high boots from Y/Project’s spring-summer 23 collection. The shoes…

HBO Max may be the streaming home of DC Comics movies and shows, but the future of those movies and shows is looking awfully murky right now. Last week, the service shocked Hollywood by canceling a big Batgirl movie that had already been shot and even screened for test audiences once or twice. Now it seems they have quietly shut down work on another DC project, this one a series based on the long-running DC science-fiction series Strange Adventures. The project was first announced in October of 2019, when HBO Max first announced a wave of DC Comics shows. The headliner at that time…

One of my favorite things about interviews is seeing things in a new light from the cast and creatives who bring entertainment to life. From my perspective, tales of the Walking Dead “Blair/Gina” is a beautiful addition to the TWD universe. As much as I enjoyed it and saw the symmetry between Blair and Gina, speaking with Parker Posey offers insight into the characters and story that only someone on the inside could provide. Parker dove into The Walking Dead universe without any background. Well, very little by way of experience, anyway. Parker hasn’t watched The Walking Dead or its…

Clinical trial results from the DRCR Retina Network suggest that a specific step strategy, in which patients with diabetic macular edema start with a less expensive medicine and switch to a more expensive medicine if vision does not improve sufficiently, gives results similar to starting off with the higher-priced drug. The main complication of diabetic macular edema, fluid build-up in the retina that causes vision loss, is commonly treated with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) drugs. The trial was funded by the National Eye Institute (NEI) and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), both part…

Carmakers not giving the customer access to their car’s full potential isn’t new, either. Back in the 1960s, the American car market was so competitive that carmakers launched updated models every year. There might be new paint and trim colors, and there would always be more performance. They achieved this by building, say, a 300-bhp engine but adding baffles and restrictors and maybe a smaller carburetor to de-tune it to 250 bhp, which would be the launch engine tune. Then each subsequent model year they would remove one of the restrictions, gaining power each time. Today, the same thing happens, just…

At first, I tried the “three sisters” companion planting method, developed by Indigenous groups in North America. This means growing sweetcorn with two other types of plants, squash and beans, and they help each other thrive. Beans improve soil fertility because, as a…
