Women’s elevated anxiety, depression and stress during pregnancy altered key features of the fetal brain, which subsequently decreased their offspring’s cognitive development at 18 months. These changes also increased internalizing and dysregulation behaviors, according to a new study by Children’s National Hospital published in JAMA Network Open. Researchers followed a cohort of 97 pregnant women and their babies. The findings further suggest that persistent psychological distress after the baby is born may influence the parent-child interaction and infant self-regulation. This is the first study to shed light on an important link between altered in-utero fetal brain development and the long-term…

Imagine there were no Beatles—or that there was no Beatlemania anyway and that the lads from Liverpool were just another band that never got a record deal or that split up before they hit it big. That is the premise Harvard University professor Cass R. Sunstein ponders in an entertaining and thought-provoking essay to be published in September in the first issue of the Journal of Beatles Studies. (A preliminary draft was posted online early this year.) The fact that there could be an academic journal devoted just to John, Paul, George and Ringo is emblematic of how popular and…

Growing up, the bottles of body sprays, lotions, butters and eau de toilettes that lined my bathroom vanity were far sweeter than a desert-filled episode of The Great British Bake Off. My rotation typically included Britney Spears’s Fantasy (or Curious); a pure-sugar scent that, not surprisingly, was called Pink Sugar; and anything else my collection of glossy magazines was advertising. If it smelled like a frosted cupcake with sprinkles, I was—without a doubt—wearing it. I’ll always love unapologetically sweet scents, but now my tastes have graduated to fragrance blends that are warm and woody or grounded with spices, leathers or classic florals. That said, signature sweet notes like vanilla are often at…

The following post contains SPOILERS for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, as well as for numerous past Marvel movies. One of the more interesting aspects of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is its treatment of dreams, which the film reveals are not simply fantasies from a person’s inner subconscious but are actually connections between variants throughout the multiverse. When Doctor Strange has a dream about a version of himself with a ponytail trying to save a young woman named America, that’s not some random nightmare; it really happened, and in a dream he was able to tap into…

Polaritons offer the best of two very different worlds. These hybrid particles combine light and molecules of organic material, making them ideal vessels for energy transfer in organic semiconductors. They are both compatible with modern electronics but also move speedily, thanks to their photonic origins. However, they are difficult to control, and much of their behavior is a mystery. A project led by Andrew Musser, assistant professor of chemistry and chemical biology in the College of Arts and Sciences, has found a way to tune the speed of this energy flow. This “throttle” can move polaritons from a near standstill…

Peer into the sky through a powerful telescope, and beyond the glare of the Milky Way, you can make out the faint glow of distant galaxies. These galaxies clump together in dense clusters joined by wispy filaments and separated by enormous voids hundreds of millions of light-years across. Since the 1980s, scientists have observed millions of galaxies to map this “cosmic web” in ever greater detail in their quest to understand our universe’s history. But there is more to this large-scale structure than meets the eye. Hydrogen atoms naturally emit radio waves with a characteristic 21-centimeter wavelength, and because hydrogen…

A speck of light that scientists once wrote off as a distant galaxy may actually be the brightest pulsar ever detected outside the Milky Way.Named PSR J0523−7125 and located about 160,000 light-years from Earth in the Large Magellanic Cloud (a satellite galaxy that orbits the Milky Way), the newly-defined pulsar is twice as wide as any other pulsar in the region, and 10 times brighter than any known pulsar beyond our galaxy. The object is so big and bright, in fact, that researchers originally interpreted it as a faraway galaxy — however, new research published May 2 in the Astrophysical…
