Since The Vampire Diaries ended in 2017, series star Candice King returned to close out first spinoff The Originals in 2018, and this week she finally appeared on the next show in TVD Universe, Legacies, for its series finale. “It’s incredible to have the opportunity to return,” King tells TV Insider and laughs about the tradition of her ending the spinoffs. Since she wasn’t on either show during the rest of their runs, “I just felt like a grateful visitor. I felt like I was over for this wonderful dinner party and was just grateful to be invited.” On Legacies,…

Scientists at the University of Bristol have discovered that body size is more important than body shape in determining the energy economy of swimming for aquatic animals. This study, published today in Communications Biology, shows that big bodies help overcome the excess drag produced by extreme morphology, debunking a long-standing idea that there is an optimal body shape for low drag. One important finding of this research is that the large necks of extinct elasmosaurs did add extra drag, but this was compensated by the evolution of large bodies. Tetrapods or ‘four-limbed vertebrates’, have repeatedly returned to the oceans over…

Fragrance is deeply personal. In general, what smells good on one person might smell entirely different on someone else. (Thanks, pheromones!) I’m a major fragrance person, and I’m constantly churning through my massive collection of fragrances, and there are some notes that I don’t like on myself but love on others. There is one fragrance note that I think works for nearly everyone, though, and that’s salt. If you think about it, it makes sense—our bodies have naturally occurring salts in them. Salty notes in perfume just help you get that certain je ne sais quoi. People will tell you that you smell good, but…

The United States Supreme Court yesterday struck down Roe v. Wade, the monumental 1973 decision that guaranteed the right to abortion in the US for 49 years and, as Maryn McKenna writes for WIRED, “revolutionized life for women.” Now, all of that is in peril. It is impossible to overstate the profound consequences of the court’s decision. In addition to the life-and-death dangers now facing people who become pregnant, the end of Roe and the rise of criminalized abortion stand to usher in a privacy nightmare that civil liberties advocates have warned about for decades. As we reported in May after a…

It’s finally been confirmed that we’ll be getting another MonsterVerse movie. It’ll be coming out around March 15 of 2024, but as of now, plot details are pretty scarce. Given the huge wealth of Godzilla movies made as part of other universes, there’s a near infinite amount of possibilities. That being said, the Legendary MonsterVerse has already developed a pretty interesting world. It started with 2014’s Godzilla, continued in 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and came to a head in 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong. We’ve met tons of Kaiju monsters, both beloved and feared. There’s also the shadowy organization known as…

Populations of Mediterranean monk seals began shrinking when seafaring civilisations expanded around the Mediterranean basin Life 24 May 2022 By Jake Buehler A Mediterranean monk seal in GreeceCristian Umili/Mondadori Portfolio via Getty Images The rarest seal species in the world started its population decline millennia ago, possibly due to the rise of ancient human civilisations. Mediterranean monk seals (Monachus monachus) are exceptionally endangered. Once widespread throughout the Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea and warmer North Atlantic coastlines, there are currently only a few hundred left in disjointed populations. Previous research has shown that these groups have low genetic variation, leaving them…

Earlier this month, I wrote about the censorship of pride displays in libraries across the U.S., including the “Hide the Pride” campaign that encourages people to check out all the LGBTQ books on display to remove them from view and keep other patrons from accessing them. In the weeks since, even more stories have come out. For one, Catholic Vote, the group that started the “Hide the Pride” campaign, has put out a self-congratulatory update with photos of Pride displays (before) and empty shelves (after). One of the people who wrote in checked out 52 books. Multiple librarians, both in…

Tom Swift is not long for this world. The CW is pulling the plug on the Nancy Drew spinoff a month into its run. Deadline broke the news Thursday, confirming that the network will air the entirety of the season. The series got off to a mediocre start in the ratings in May, and is averaging around 500,000 viewers with a week of DVR factored in. In any other season, those numbers might have been enough for The CW to keep the show around. However, these are difficult times for the network. Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount are exploring a…

NASA’s Curiosity Mars rover took this selfie at a location nicknamed “Mary Anning” after a 19th century English paleontologist. Curiosity snagged three samples of drilled rock at this site on its way out of the Glen Torridon region, which scientists believe was a site where ancient conditions would have been favorable to supporting life, if it ever was present. Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/MSSS According to a new NASA laboratory experiment, rovers may have to dig about 6.6 feet (two meters) or more under the Martian surface to find signs of ancient life because ionizing radiation from space degrades small molecules such as…

Despite the scorching summer temperatures, many of Black entertainment’s biggest stars — from Billy Porter to Lizzo — stepped out in lavish, long-sleeved ensembles that featured show-stopping design elements. Others, however, opted for more minimalist pieces, like host Taraji P. Henson, who wore a sparkly gunmetal one-shoulder gown accented with a large chain-link necklace that draped along her back. Climbing has never been more popular. Whether you’re discovering nearby outdoor climbs on Mountain Project or Googling local indoor climbing gyms, you’ve likely got a climbing spot near your home no matter where you live. But it’s fine to start outdoors if you fall in with the right climbers or enroll in an American Mountain Guides Association-accredited course. Whether you’re indoors or outdoors, you’re going to need some essential gear. I’m keeping it simple (and affordable) in this guide, as it’s easy to get overwhelmed by all…

If pimples are caused by oily skin, why doesn’t a good washing prevent all breakouts? A recent study offers an answer— and maybe a new line of defense. Pimples contain tiny and discrete bacterial infections. The most commonly involved bacteria are Cutibacterium acnes, which live innocuously on skin cells but can grow out of control when the skin’s oily sebum increases and boosts bacterial food supply. What we think of as acne—the pustules, redness and swelling—is a battle between our immune system and these rapidly multiplying bacteria, says dermatologist Richard Gallo of the University of California, San Diego, who led…

As Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” becomes a chart-topping hit thanks to its placement in the popular Netflix series Stranger Things, one thing becomes perfectly clear — music and film (or in this case, highly cinematic television) are undeniably linked. A great song has the power to elevate a movie scene, while a well-executed scene can breathe new life into a track. But there are some song uses in films that just stand out. There’s something magical about them. It’s hard to put a finger on what makes a needle drop special, but you know it when you hear…
