A large study that focused on whether exercise and mindfulness training could boost cognitive function in older adults found no such improvement following either intervention. Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and the University of California, San Diego, studied the cognitive effects of exercise, mindfulness training or both for up to 18 months in older adults who reported age-related changes in memory but had not been diagnosed with any form of dementia. The findings are published Dec. 13 in JAMA. “We know beyond any doubt that exercise is good for older adults, that it can lower…

It took three episodes of a long cold war for mother and daughter to finally sit down and talk. Georgia finally revealed to Ginny why she killed Kenny on Ginny & Georgia Season 2 Episode 3. After their brutal fight, it was enjoyable to see them against the world again. While things were thawing with her mom, Ginny still dealt with an icy reception from the mean girls at school. You couldn’t pay me to return to high school. Teenage girls are mean when they think they’ve been wronged, and Maxine Baker now considers Ginny her archnemesis. Abby wasn’t far…

It’s been creeping up for a while now, an old breed of horror. A movie here, another there. But now, in 2022, the time has come to give it a name: elevator-pitch horror. These films are just what they sound like: You can summarize their conceit in a single breath. Scary Airbnb house? Check (Barbarian). An infectious and dishonest smile that will kill you in seven days? OK (Smile)! Perhaps it’s haunted Zoom calls (Host) or a beach that makes you old (Old). Or a series of gruesome murders on a porn set (X). And for next year, a comedy spin on…
If you want to see an alien creature then stop searching the cosmos and take a trip to the bottom of the sea.The ocean’s depths are full of weird and wonderful creatures, and as humans venture deeper into the abyss more and more of them are being spotted. In 2022, scientists spotted an entire aquarium’s worth of deep sea beauties. From blue goo and gummy squirrels to a spaghetti worm and Jell-O fish, here are our favorites.Luminous lump of spaghettiAn image of the unnamed spaghetti worm. Studio interference has long been the bane of any auteur filmmaker. According to James Gunn though, it’s a thing of the past at DC. While almost every studio gets involved with the production of their big-budget films in a way their directors might not appreciate, DC has a history of going a little bit overboard.Perhaps the most notorious example of this is when Zack Snyder stepped away from a DC project. He was in the middle of working on Justice League when Snyder quit; the studio then brought in Joss Whedon to finish the film. Of course, everyone had a hard time adjusting…
What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Gingered: A Memoir? This project started in late 2020, fresh on the heels of COVID-19, when we all didn’t know where we were allowed to go, who we were supposed to be, and when we’d experience genuine connection again. I started writing—on Instagram—short, true (sometimes funny) stories from my life. And people liked them. So I kept writing—for close to 200 days straight without stopping. I connected with people I hadn’t seen in years. People laughed. They shared their own memories with me. I felt human again. Then something…
Happy 16th birthday to Maxine and Marcus Baker. While there were still some serious aspects, Ginny & Georgia Season 2 Episode 4 featured more lighthearted teenage issues. Ginny worried about make-up and giving her boyfriend a blow job for the first time. Paul and Georgia disagreed on Marcus being allowed to sneak in through Ginny’s window. Instead of heavier issues, these seemed like typical teenage issues. Relationships have started to bloom. Cynthia had started hanging out at Blue Star Farma more because Tom didn’t recognize her, and she needed the comfort of an old friend. Even though Georgia isn’t dating…
When it comes to fossils, dinosaurs usually dominate the headlines. But many amazing and scientifically important non-dino fossil discoveries get dug up every year that deserve just as much respect. And 2022 was no different. From the oldest fossilized brain and ancient panda teeth to mangled “dragon” bones and a 3D fish face, here are some of our favorites.Oldest fossilized brainAn abstract artist’s impression of what the fossilized worm, Cardiodictyon catenulum, may have looked like. Photography by Getty Images And once again telling a story with their style. By Natalie Michie Date December 20, 2022 Where would we be without Euphoria’s fashion influence? Since its premiere in 2019, the Sam Levinson series has gone from a teen drama phenomenon to a trend-setting cultural force. With season 3 approaching, fans received a welcome dose of the show’s stylized aesthetic when several members of the cast reunited on December 18. In true Euphoria fashion, each star’s look was more distinct than the last, and, as it turns out, maybe a little symbolic of their character. Zendaya, Hunter…
Sleep is an essential part of our biology. Not getting enough of it harms our decision-making skills, our reasoning, even our social interactions. However, sleep has recently become yet another aspect of our lives that causes endless worry, rather than being enjoyable. We’ve become obsessed with getting the perfect night’s sleep. As a consequence, many of us are now afflicted by sleep anxiety, a condition in which people worry about not falling asleep or staying asleep. In 2018, a study in Nature & Science of Sleep found that this type of anxiety is fueled by a cycle of increased stress, also known as…
Netflix will begin cracking down on password sharing in the US starting in early 2023, reports The Wall Street Journal. This summer, the streaming platform tested out an “extra home” fee in Argentina, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras after first rolling it out in Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru. Based on those tests, the new monthly fee is expected to cost $3 per extra home in the US. Netflix is well aware of how the crackdown will alienate customers. “Make no mistake, I don’t think consumers are going to love it right out of the gate,” Co-CEO…

Lots of new names and voices are being published in the murder mystery world and podcast world, with television and movies following suit. However, as a mystery reader, I’ve shied away from a lot of the true crime. Initially, it was because I associated the genre with serial killers, which I just don’t like in any format, fiction or nonfiction, but I acknowledge that the genre has really expanded…
When digging into your family history, sometimes difficult truths arise. In the Finding Your Roots Season 9 premiere, Julia Roberts learns her family’s connection to slavery. And her reaction is seen in the TV Insider exclusive clip featured above. In the video from the January 3 Season 9 premiere, airing at 8/7c on PBS, Roberts learns her Southern ancestors owned seven enslaved people during the American slavery era spanning the ages of 6 to 33 years old. There were two adult women (33 and 20), three teenagers (17, 13, and 11), and two children (8 and 6) in the group,…

However, there’s one thing that & Other Stories is particularly acing this season, and that’s coats—specifically belted coats. We’ve lost count of the number of people we’ve spotted in one of these outwear gems in London, but unlike other viral fashion items, the design is so classic that you’d never know they were all from the same store.Coming in a range of stylish shades and flattering, ageless fits, these coats are guaranteed to go with everything you own. Our personal highlight has to be the chic beige belted coat which would look so good thrown over textural colour-match layers. We also…

World War Z: Aftermath released in September 2021 on a variety of systems, and now Saber Interactive has revealed when the co-op shooter is coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Existing owners can snag this free upgrade on January 24. Details are slim on what will be in these PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions. However, the team promised that more details would be coming soon. Saber also showed more of Horde Mode XL, which, as its name implies, is a larger version of its existing Horde Mode. It follows the same rules as the vanilla variant, but…
At corporations and organizations like universities, policies meant to promote equity, diversity and inclusion are being used to enhance wealth and status. Credit: Sam Balye, Unsplash In capitalistic economies like those in the West, wealth and status accumulation often drive our every endeavor. Education, skills training and social networks, among other aspects, become tools that we use in this rat race to push ahead for our interests. Such questionable ethics seem ripe for a reassessment. I once believed equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) policies for government and industry could help. In 2016, while at the University of Alberta’s Office of…
another beginning by Caitlin Blackburn What’s it About? A book of poetry about someone who came out of total despair to discover the bliss of simply existing. Grief and sorrow are feelings all too familiar in life, but everyone experiences them differently. While some find it easy to rise from the depths of despair, others trudge on for what seems like an eternity, struggling with depression and anxiety, battling against seemingly insurmountable odds. Caitlin Blackburn addresses these issues in her debut book of poetry, another beginning (Antrim House). By taking readers on a journey through her own plummet into despair…
Can Detective Jamie Whelan (Brent Antonello) handle the pressure of going undercover? That’s the question for the January 5 winter premiere of Law & Order: Organized Crime. In “Trap,” one of Detective Elliot Stabler’s (Christopher Meloni) informants turns to him when his wife is kidnapped by a rising gang based out of Miami. They want to take over New York and are running drugs, using street racing nights to recruit the best drivers. “Bell and Stabler read Jamie’s file and they find out that he was a stock car racer back in the day, and they use those skills that…

Many governments, such as Iceland and the UK, are experimenting with three-day weekends. There’s a perception that all sides can benefit from such policies: Workers get more time off and superior mental health; companies get higher productivity and lower wage demands. In 2023, many of these scientific studies will indeed show indications that the three-day weekend is a good idea and, consequently, some governments will enact national policies. This transition, however, will fail—due to bad science. The idea of “evidence-based” policies has become mainstream in economics. Policy field experiments—scientifically designed trials run in the real environment where the policy under consideration will…
