Olrog’s gull (Larus atlanticus) has dark wingsJacinto Escaray/Shutterstock The dark colours on the top of the short, wide wings of some seagulls help change the temperature of the surrounding air, which may allow the birds to glide efficiently without compromising their agility. Birds tend to have either relatively long, thin wings that support long-haul soaring, or shorter, wider wings that permit more energy efficient movements like turning and taking off. But some gulls have developed wings that can do both by absorbing heat from the air, says Madeleine Goumas at the University of Exeter, UK. “Gulls are always flitting about and taking…

When we call a TV show trashy, it means it’s a guilty pleasure. We can consume large quantities of it like a garbage disposal. We don’t want to think too hard when watching TV some days, so we need something that will keep us engaged with minimal effort and ultimately make us feel good about myself. Enter reality dating shows. America knows how to pump out shows that maniacally twist lines, produce secondhand cringe, and put singles at the mercy of each other, all in the name of love. They’ll have your friends saying “You’d be perfect to go on…

There is a lot of discussion and hand wringing these days (a lot of it quite deserved!) about the rise of artificial intelligence. And this ain’t the cute kind of A.I. that looks like Haley Joel Osment. This is the sort that can mimic human thinking, speech, and even writing, producing work in an instant that would take a real person hours or days. Ahead of its upcoming contract negotiations, the Writers Guild of America revealed is already concerned enough about A.I. to add “regulate use of material produced using artificial intelligence or similar technologies” as one of its demands. It’s an…

CLIMATEWIRE | Algal blooms are growing bigger and more frequent worldwide as ocean temperatures rise and circulation patterns change. Climate change is likely one cause of the alterations, which favor the growth of phytoplankton, according to a new study published in Nature. Whether it’s good or bad is a murky question. Algae are an important food source for many marine animals, and large blooms can sometimes be a benefit for ocean ecosystems and fisheries. But some algal blooms also release toxins into the water and poison the environment. And when blooms die off and begin to decompose, they can reduce the oxygen concentrations in…

There are few things more annoying to me than feeling too stupid to understand a book. Time travel, hard science, stuff tied in with mathematics or physics…these are all subjects that I struggle with to begin with; add in a narrative and a cast of characters, and I’m reading at a snail’s pace and taking notes to keep everything straight. Then there are times when I can character- and plot-map to my heart’s desire and reread chapters on end, but still close the book wondering what I just read. And not in a disappointed in the book way — disappointed…

That’s the major finding from our new study, published in Early Childhood Research Quarterly. We analyzed a nationally representative sample followed from the start of kindergarten to the end of fifth grade. Our findings indicate that calls to diversify the teacher workforce are unlikely to meaningfully address large racial and ethnic educational inequities in U.S. elementary schools. We compared the academic achievement, classroom behavior and executive functioning of U.S. elementary school students across two naturally occurring conditions.…

Sometimes, as with The Country Bears or that first Haunted Mansion, it did not.As hard as it is to believe, that first Haunted Mansion film is now 20 years old.
