Credit: Unsplash/CC0 Public Domain By using precision gene engineering techniques, researchers at the Earlham Institute in Norwich have been able to turn tobacco plants into solar-powered factories for moth sex pheromones. Critically, they’ve shown how the production of these molecules can be efficiently managed so as not to hamper normal plant growth. Pheromones are complex chemicals produced and released by an organism as a means of communication. They allow members of the same species to send signals, which includes letting others know they’re looking for love. Farmers can hang pheromone dispersers among their crops to mimic the signals of female…

The mighty smartphone is facing a reckoning—at least from a sales perspective. During the 2022 holiday season, smartphone shipments declined more than 18 percent from the same period the year before. In general, last year had the lowest annual shipment total since 2013. Research firm IDC said this was due to “significantly dampened consumer demand, inflation, and economic uncertainties.” One needs only to do a double-take at their grocery bill to feel these pressures, but macroeconomics aside, the smartphone itself probably deserves some of the blame (or credit) for our waning interest. Smartphones are, actually, amazing devices. That’s why we’re so addicted…

For the SNL purists, last night’s sketch “Traffic Altercation” is for you. Without giving too much away, the sketch starred episode host Quinta Brunson and Mikey Day as drivers stuck in traffic. Tensions soon flare and the two communicate to one another by making increasingly hostile hand gestures. The sketch also featured Ego Nwodim as…

But now that new space businesses are launching, the travelers and workers will be mostly civilians. This civilian move into space has already started. Ticket-buying or privately funded passengers have traveled into suborbital space, 50 to 60 miles above Earth, during the past couple…

However, taking the conversation in a new direction, researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign conducted a bio-inspired study with a novel twist — variable stiffness — to learn more about how it affects lift. The researchers wondered if they could model a flap on an airfoil, or wing, with varying stiffnesses over time much like a bird can tense, or stiffen, the musculature and tendons connected to covert feathers. “We know from previous studies that having a flap with some stiffness could…

For decades planetary scientists assumed Mars was dead. Geologically, that is. Smaller than Earth, the planet would have cooled faster than ours after it formed. It was, for a time, quite volcanically active. The assumption was that when the interior temperature gradually decreased, so, too, did the planet’s ability to generate large-scale geologic activity such as huge volcanoes and “marsquakes.” New discoveries, however, belie that belief. It just so happens that Mars is only mostly dead. Scientists have found that a large region on Mars has been prone to quakes and even mild volcanic activity in recent geologic times, indicating…

To me, it was the picture of personal style carefully cultivated through the decades. This is the ethos of grandmother fashion, which is set to be…
