But because of how ChatGPT works—by finding statistical patterns in text rather than connecting words to meaning—it will also often fabricate facts and figures, misunderstand questions, and exhibit biases found in its training data. This is likely to complicate efforts to use the technology widely, by for example by mixing misleading or biased information into search results. One reason for tech industry excitement around ChatGPT, fed by its parlor tricks, is the suggestion it might disrupt the long-standing dominance of Google and other tech giants, by allowing small companies to outcompete much larger competitors. One popular theory is that the bot could…

Electric vehicles are widely hailed as a key way to mitigate climate change through reduced emissions, but research on the dual benefits of reduced air pollution and improved health has been largely hypothetical. A team of researchers from the Keck School of Medicine of USC have now begun to document the actual impact of electric vehicle adoption in the first study to use real-world data to link electric cars, air pollution and health. Leveraging publicly available datasets, the researchers analyzed a “natural experiment” occurring in California as residents in the state rapidly transitioned to electric cars, or light-duty zero emissions…
The Christie Affair by Nina de Gramont (St. Martin’s Press) Dear Reader, Here’s an alarming adage: “If you want to know about a man’s job, ask his wife. If you want to know about a man’s wife, ask his mistress.” In 1926, Agatha Christie’s husband demanded a divorce so he could marry another woman. The author became so distraught she disappeared for 11 days — not even returning when the hunt for her was splashed on the front cover of every newspaper in the world. The Christie Affair imagines this hundred-year-old mystery from the perspective of the one person nobody…

Bits of the stars are all around us, and in us, too. About half of the abundance of elements heavier than iron originates in some of the most violent explosions in the cosmos. As the universe churns and new stars and planets form out of old gas and dust, these elements eventually make their way to Earth and other worlds. After 3.7 billion years of evolution on our planet, humans and many other species have come to rely on them in our bodies and our lives. Iodine, for instance, is a component of hormones we need to control our brain…
It is a widely discussed fact in the Who What Wear group chat that M&S shoes are some of the best on the market. Last week, when I shared that I was planning on popping in to try on a load of its latest shoes (all in the name of journalistic research), it was met with exclaims and admissions of how highly my fellow editors rate the high-street hero’s footwear. “I have such a soft spot for M&S shoes” and “the comfort insoles are the one” are just a couple of examples. But I too consider myself a loyal fan, and some of my longest-lasting, most-loved pairs have…

The Last of Us is definitely not dying (or being reborn as a fungal-infected monster) any time soon.HBO announced today that it had officially renewed its new hit series, based on the PlayStation video game, for a second season. The renewal comes a few days after the second episode of The Last of Us was watched by 5.7 million viewers on the channel as well as HBO Max. Those numbers actually represent a 22 percent increase from the premiere — the largest such week two jump in the history of HBO. Meaning much like the infection that brings about the end of…
Battlegrounds by Stephen Carter The first of the Matari Series, Stephen A. Carter’s Battlegrounds (Outer Banks Publishing Group) presents a gripping story of historical fiction that captures the complexity of the years preceding the US Civil War. Carter illustrates the greed, bloodlust and political manipulations of both the North and South that pushed America towards the abyss, and he does so with incredible historical accuracy. While being a proud Canadian, Carter dedicated his university studies and much of his professional writing to the subject of the United States’ Antebellum South, the US Civil War and following Reconstruction. We spoke with the…
Nearly half the world’s mountain glaciers are expected to disappear by the end of this century, even if the world meets its most ambitious climate goals. A new study found that 1.5 degrees Celsius of global warming would wipe out around 104,000 glaciers and raise global sea levels by about 3.5 inches in the process. And that’s a best-case scenario. Keeping global temperatures within 1.5 C of their preindustrial levels is the most aggressive target under the Paris climate agreement. Yet that threshold is swiftly approaching, and the world could overshoot it within a decade or so. Climate pledges currently in…
The CBS primetime lineup just won’t be the same after May 14, the day that NCIS: Los Angeles will be airing its series finale. The good news: There’s enough time that the producers will be able to write an ending. The bad news: We’re going to have to say goodbye to so much we love about the show. To go along…

The following essay is reprinted with permission from The Conversation, an online publication covering the latest research. What comes to mind when you think of someone who stutters? Is that person male or female? Are they weak and nervous, or powerful and heroic? If you have a choice, would you like to marry them, introduce them to your friends or recommend them for a job? Your attitudes toward people who stutter may depend partly on what you think causes stuttering. If you think that stuttering is due to psychological causes, such as being nervous, research suggests that you are more…

Yellowstone is, this season, giving us more of a look into the Duttons’ past than it has before, with a significant amount of flashbacks showing younger versions of John (Josh Lucas), Beth (Kylie Rogers), and Rip (Kyle Red Silverstein). When we last saw flashbacks, before the midseason break — the Paramount Network show returns in the summer — Beth and Rip’s relationship was, of course, complicated. Oh, and Rip had accidentally killed Rowdy (Kai Caster) and accepted the brand as a result. Here, Rogers opens up about playing Beth in the flashbacks. How much did you know about how much…
A collaboration between scientists at Cambridge and UCL has led to the discovery of a new form of ice that more closely resembles liquid water than any other and may hold the key to understanding this most famous of liquids. The new form of ice is amorphous. Unlike ordinary crystalline ice where the molecules arrange themselves in a regular pattern, in amorphous ice the molecules are in a disorganised form that resembles a liquid. In this paper, published in Science, the team created a new form of amorphous ice in experiment and achieved an atomic-scale model of it in computer…
