Northern Vermont University, Castleton University, and Vermont Technical College are consolidating into one university, Vermont State University, by July 1st. As part of the consolidation, administrators announced they will be donating most of the library’s physical collection in favor of a digital-only library and repurposing the library building. Some students argued that digital-only resources were inaccessible to many students with disabilities that make it harder to read on screens. One second-year…

“Exascale” sounds like a science-fiction term, but it has a simple and very nonfictional definition: while a human brain can perform about one simple mathematical operation per second, an exascale computer can do at least one quintillion calculations in the time it takes to say, “One Mississippi.” In 2022 the world’s first declared exascale computer, Frontier, came online at Oak Ridge National Laboratory—and it’s 2.5 times faster than the second-fastest-ranked computer in the world. It will soon have better competition (or peers), though, from incoming examachines such as El Capitan, housed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and Aurora, which will…

The Covid-19 crisis highlighted certain economic and welfare issues associated with using animals for research. Pandemic-related closures meant that many labs had to halt experiments and euthanize animals. Then the race to develop vaccines and treatments for Covid-19 meant monkeys were in short supply due to huge demand. While alternative methods are promising, they’re relatively new. Methods for developing organ chips, organoids, and computer models also vary from lab to lab, making it difficult to draw broad conclusions about their accuracy.  Boston biotech company chip Emulate, cofounded by Ingber, is testing how well its liver-on-a-chip device does at flagging the presence of dangerous chemicals.…

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, The Last of Us creator Neil Druckmann spoke about why Episode 3 of the HBO series differed so much from the game. The latest episode in the HBO adaptation, titled “Long, Long Time,” tells the story of Bill and Frank. Unlike the game, however, which just sees players meeting Bill, this episode is fully dedicated to the pair’s tragic love story. According to Druckmann — who serves as showrunner on the series alongside Craig Mazin — deciding when to deviate so heavily from the game often depends on how good they think the deviation will…
