“There’s no such thing as a good landlord” is a rallying cry of angry renters. In the future, it might be conventional morality that it’s simply wrong to own land.In our times, owning land seems as natural as owning cars or houses. And this makes sense: The general presumption is that you can privately own anything, with rare exceptions for items such as dangerous weapons or archaeological artifacts. In their paper published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, the group describes their difficulties in accessing the guano pile and how they studied its contents. As climate change progresses, scientists around the world continue to study potential impacts of ongoing climate change. One way they do so is by studying…

Some of the hues of the season center around bright, bold tones like kelly green, classic cobalt, and fiery red. And others speak to a slightly more muted pastel-based palette: think butter yellow, powder blue, and electric lilac.…

In their study, reported in the journal Nature, Andrew Kelleghan, Ana Bulger, Dominick Witkowski and Neil Garg conducted experiments with the high-energy compound. For many years, 1,2,3-cyclohexatriene has been virtually ignored as a useful reagent for use in organic synthesis—it has been considered to be too…

Creatively tiling a bathroom floor isn’t just a stressful task for DIY home renovators. It is also one of the hardest problems in mathematics. For centuries, experts have been studying the special properties of tile shapes that can cover floors, kitchen backsplashes or infinitely large planes without leaving any gaps. Specifically, mathematicians are interested in tile shapes that can cover the whole plane without ever creating a repeating design. In these special cases, called aperiodic tilings, there’s no pattern that you can copy and paste to keep the tiling going. No matter how you chop up the mosaic, each section…
