It’s hot outside (at least in the Northern Hemisphere), so why not raise the temperature inside, too? Metaphorically, that is. I’m talking about romance novels, of course! We’ve got nine new releases in romance for August, though, of course, there are loads more than I can keep track of. If you want all the new release info in one place, check out the Book Riot’s New Release Index, curated by and searchable by date, genre, and assorted other filters. For this round-up, I…
Regarding the return of Magnum P.I., it’s a good news-bad news situation for fans. Let’s go with the good news first. Unlike many scripted programs, the second half of the NBC series’ fifth season will return on Oct. 4, earlier than was previously announced. The bad news is that these episodes are likely the end for the Magnum reboot. After saving the show following its cancellation by CBS, NBC managed to run it into the ground before canceling it yet again. Yup, it’s been that kind of season for Magnum. Here’s everything we know about the probable Magnum final ride.…
“There is no dark side of the moon, really. Matter of fact, it’s all dark.” —Pink Floyd With my apologies to Roger Waters, who wrote those lyrics, there is a dark side of the moon. And sometimes it’s not all that dark. You can see that for yourself over the next few nights. Go outside just after sunset, and turn your gaze to the west. You’ll see brilliant Venus setting not far above the horizon and, depending on the exact day you look, the thin crescent moon nearby. If you go out tonight (Friday, July 21, 2023), the moon will…

The former couple share a daughter together, two-year-old Khai.DiCaprio split from his girlfriend Camila Marrone earlier this summer after four years. The 47-year-old actor and Hadid have known one another for a long time, but this was the first time their potential for romance has come to fruition. Things…
“Barbenheimer”—the collective celebration around the release of the Barbie and Oppenheimer movies—has collided with the wedding industrial complex. That’s not a joke. According to a Variety story this week, people are planning on taking their friends and family, prenuptials, to see the two films as a double feature. People who aren’t getting married are planning similar movie-watching marathons. It’s the kind of viral cultural moment marketing teams dream of. It also feels like a sign of the end times. This sense of dread doesn’t stem from the public’s collective yearning to absorb stories about a Mattel doll and the development of…

Discovery+ has a hit on its hands with Survive the Raft, a new reality series that puts nine people from different walks of life on a raft for 21 days. There, they must live and work in close contact as they come against adverse weather, differing opinions, and much more. It’s the perfect social experiment with some strategy thrown in for good measure. TV Fanatic got the chance to speak with host Nate Boyer about being a part of the project. The project enticed him on the concept alone. “The idea of these very diverse people being thrust into this…
The Southern Delta Aquariid meteor shower will peak this weekend, but it’s just the first act of a multiweek “shooting star” season, with the best show still a few weeks away.Known for faint shooting stars, the Southern Delta Aquariid meteor shower will peak overnight on Sunday, July 30 through Monday, July 31, with about 20 meteors per hour expected, according to the American Meteor Society. The precise peak will be at 11 p.m. EDT on Sunday (0300 GMT on Monday). However, the Southern Delta Aquariids produce good meteor rates for a week, centered on the peak night. That said, this summer I’ve noticed the street style trends coming out of Paris’s Couture Fashion Week are more, for lack of a better word, wearable than ever. Wearable as in you could throw them on to go out for dinner without the risk of tripping up your waiter with a gargantuan train. Instead, I’ve been impressed at the simpler but no-less stylish outfits showgoers have been sporting, and I think you will be, too.First things first, there’s a lot of pink which, let’s face it, really shouldn’t come as a surprise at this point. There’s also a focus on a…
Fruit flies are sensitive to the sight of dead fliesMauritius images GmbH/Alamy Fruit flies exposed to dead flies of their species age faster, and researchers have identified the precise brain cells that respond to the sight of corpses and trigger this rapid ageing, ultimately leading to an early death. Christi Gendron and Scott Pletcher at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and their colleagues have been studying how experiences produce physiological changes that affect lifespan. They originally set out to discover if fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) respond to other flies being ill. “We didn’t see a response until the infection…
Last month, a court in Kenya issued a landmark ruling against Meta, owner of Facebook and Instagram. The US tech giant was, the court ruled, the “true employer” of the hundreds of people employed in Nairobi as moderators on its platforms, trawling through posts and images to filter out violence, hate speech and other shocking content. That means Meta can be sued in Kenya for labor rights violations, even though moderators are technically employed by a third party contractor.Social media giant TikTok was watching the case closely. The company also uses outsourced moderators in Kenya, and in other countries in…

What started as an extremely elaborate joke on a TV show has now, somehow, become an actual stage show — not to mention the first musical from Marvel — playing at one of the biggest theme parks in the world. It’s called Rogers: The Musical and it’s an expansion of the show of the same name that was briefly seen in the opening episode of Marvel’s Hawkeye TV series. In that show, Clint Barton takes his family to see a Broadway musical — which turns out to be a deeply ridiculous show based on the events of the first Avengers movie. While viewers only got a…

Google announced on Wednesday that the developers can now test Google Password Manager’s passkey support on Android and Chrome. Passkeys are designed as a safer alternative to passwords and traditional two-factor authentication methods. Google claims that passkeys cannot be reused, won’t leak in server breaches, and protect users from phishing attacks. Since passkeys have been developed using industry standards, they will offer a uniform user experience across Windows, macOS and iOS, and ChromeOS. The company expects to release a stable version of this feature later this year.As mentioned earlier, Google has revealed that passkeys on Android and Chrome are currently…

Boundaries by Millie by Jo Smoak What’s it About? An adorable donkey named Millie teaches kids a very valuable lesson about boundaries and saying “no.” The purpose of children’s books is to teach kids lessons through entertaining stories at an early age. That way, when they become young adults, they might be able to better navigate some of life’s curveballs. As an adult with young nephews, I am always reading children’s books and wondering about the deeper meaning behind them. Boundaries by Mille by Jo Smoak is here to teach kids (and adult people pleasers like me) a very valuable…

Every 10 seconds, somewhere in the universe, a star explodes. The light from a small fraction of these supernovae—roughly a few hundred per year—reaches us here on Earth to be pored over by astronomers. Studying supernovae is vital to gaining a deeper understanding of the cosmos because they spew forth radiation, dust and gas that help sculpt galaxies, form new stars and planets and enrich the universe with heavy elements. But most are so distant that we can do little more than guess at their exact stellar origins using a handful of hard-won photons to assemble an incomplete play-by-play of…
