If you guessed “a supermassive black hole that has escaped its host galaxy,” you’re probably right. At least that’s the conclusion of an international team of researchers who found and studied the candidate runaway using some of the world’s most powerful telescopes. The discovery is detailed in a paper published on April 6 in Astrophysical Journal Letters. For reasons that are still poorly understood, supermassive black holes lurk at the centers of most large galaxies…

Troy Baker, who served as the original voice and motion-capture actor for Joel in both The Last of Us Part I and II, received not just a cameo in the HBO adaptation but a supporting role as David’s right-hand man, James. The role is a small one in the game but was expanded significantly for episode 8, where Ellie herself gets the chance to swing an axe at Baker’s head. As Baker told Vulture after the episode aired, “I never was promised a role. I was happy, on this one, to be in the stands rather than on the field.…

Just days after Russian troops headed toward Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, Vladimir Putin signed legislation that criminalizes spreading “fake” information about the war, with a penalty of up to 15 years in prison. The use of coal power is not decreasing fast enough. The Paris Agreement’s target of a maximum of 2 degrees of warming appear to be missed, and the world is moving towards a temperature increase of 2.5-3 degrees. At the same time it is feasible to avoid higher warming. This is shown by researchers from Chalmers University of Technology and Lund University, Sweden, in a new study. “More and more countries are promising that they will phase out coal from their energy systems, which is positive. But unfortunately, their commitments are not strong enough. If we are to have a…

Last Friday afternoon, Twitter posted the source code of its recommendation algorithm to GitHub. Twitter said it was “open sourcing” its algorithm, something I would typically be in favor of. Recommendation algorithms and open source code are major focuses of my work as a researcher and advocate for corporate accountability in the tech industry. My research has demonstrated why and how companies like YouTube should be more transparent about the inner workings of their recommendation algorithms—and I’ve run campaigns pressuring them to do so. Mozilla, the nonprofit where I am a senior fellow, famously open-sourced the Netscape browser code and invited a…
