“Guided by the enduring principles of safety, security, and trust, the voluntary commitments address the risks presented by advanced AI models and promote the adoption of specific practices—such as red-team testing and the publication of transparency reports—that will propel the whole ecosystem forward,” Microsoft president Brad Smith said in a blog post. The potential societal risks the agreement pledges companies to watch for do not include the carbon footprint of training AI models, a concern that is now commonly cited in research on the impact of AI systems. Creating a system like ChatGPT can require thousands of high-powered computer processors, running…

Two hours before a large earthquake, the ground seems to move—infinitesimally and without causing any shaking—a new study shows. This movement, known as an aseismic slip, may be a potential pathway toward predicting damaging quakes before they happen, the researchers say. Many seismologists have long argued that earthquakes are impossible to predict because Earth’s crust doesn’t give any detectable warning before it snaps. The new study, published on Thursday in Science, suggests that there are in fact warning signs. They’re just very, very subtle. “It’s solid evidence that there is something happening before large earthquakes,” says study co-author Quentin Bletery,…

Memories can be as tricky to hold onto for machines as they can be for humans. To help understand why artificial agents develop holes in their own cognitive processes, electrical engineers at The Ohio State University have analyzed how much a process called “continual learning” impacts their overall performance. Continual learning is when a computer is trained to continuously learn a sequence of tasks, using its accumulated knowledge from old tasks to better learn new tasks. Yet one major hurdle scientists still need to overcome to achieve such heights is learning how to circumvent the machine learning equivalent of memory…

Left unchecked, the visual culture of entertainment is headed into a phase of post-authenticity, a period where artificial media will have an even more damaging impact on how culture is made, represented, and sold. Like the video of Minaj and Holland, these skewed and skewering visuals, as they grow in intensity through advertising campaigns and marketing efficiency, are a reminder that the present is the future: a constant, ferocious collapse of the real into the unreal, an ungovernable reality where the remixing of stereotypes is not only accepted but big business. To make a product viable in the marketplace, one must…

Their experiments show that once we’ve chosen to buy something, we tend to consider that money as already spent or gone, also called “loss booking.” If we decide we want to return the item, retailers can take advantage of that…
