An international team led by astronomers from the Curtin University node of the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) has discovered a new type of stellar object that challenges our understanding of the physics of neutron stars. The object could be an ultra-long period magnetar, a rare type of star with extremely strong magnetic fields that can produce powerful bursts of energy. Until recently, all known magnetars released energy at intervals ranging from a few seconds to a few minutes. The newly discovered object emits radio waves every 22 minutes, making it the longest period magnetar ever detected. The…

Whilst I’ve always had a bit of a love-hate relationship with self-tan, I tried one earlier this year that totally changed my mind. The self-tan in question was the Isle of Paradise Self-Tanning Drops (£22), and it turns out I’m not the only one who now swears by the brand for glowing skin. Before launching the brand, founder Jules Von Hep worked with best-selling tanning brands like St. Tropez and could often be spotted backstage at fashion week prepping models skin with a golden glow. In fact, he was even the tanner of choice for celebrities like Sienna Miller, Kate Moss and Lily…
The Watch6 runs the new Wear OS 4 version, and the app selection on Google’s smartwatch platform is slowly improving. I’ve used it to check my Google Keep notes, and I love using the Google Home app to control my living room fan and the window AC in my office. I really want to see more messaging apps join the platform, though. WhatsApp is now available, which is great for starting new conversations if your phone is in another room, but can Telegram come back? Or Facebook Messenger? One new crucial addition in Wear OS 4 is the ability to finally…

A subtle mistranslation of Isaac Newton’s first law of motion that flew under the radar for three centuries is giving new insight into what the pioneering natural philosopher was thinking when he laid the foundations of classical mechanics. The first law of motion is often paraphrased as “objects in motion tend to stay in motion, and objects at rest tend to stay at rest.” But the history of this rather obvious-seeming axiom about inertia is complicated. Writing in Latin in his 17th-century book Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica, Newton said, “Every body perseveres in its state of being at rest or…

For decades, scientists have been probing the potential of two-dimensional materials to transform our world. 2D materials are only a single layer of atoms thick. Within them, subatomic particles like electrons can only move in two dimensions. This simple restriction can trigger unusual electron behavior, imbuing the materials with “exotic” properties like bizarre forms of magnetism, superconductivity and other collective behaviors among electrons — all of which could be useful in computing, communication, energy and other fields. But researchers have generally assumed that these exotic 2D properties exist only in single-layer sheets, or short stacks. The so-called “bulk” versions of…
As I am prone to hormonal breakouts on my chin and redness in certain areas like around my nose, the concealer I go with in first is as close to the tone of my skin I can get, and I generally find formulas in a pot work best. At this stage, I’ll apply and blur out with my fingertips. I’ll then go in with a foundation or skin tint, and finish with my second concealer under my eyes and on the high points of my face. To do this, I use a slightly damp beauty blender.Because concealer has become such an…

In Japan, fireflies have long been the harbingers of summer, taking to the skies in June and July in a flickering dance of courtship that lights up the night. Moriyama’s Genjis were especially prized for their vivid, yellow-green glow, drawing tourists from around the country by at least the mid-19th century. But eventually, intrepid entrepreneurs realized that they could make more money by capturing and shipping the tiny insects from Moriyama to population centers like Osaka, Kyoto, and Tokyo than they could by waiting for urbanites to come to them. Throughout Japan’s Meiji period, which stretched from 1868 to 1912, a…
Jimmy Buffett, the easygoing “Margaritaville” singer/songwriter who transformed his no-worries, beachy lifestyle into a five-decade endless road trip as a performer and entrepreneur, has died at age 76. The news, announced on his website and social media accounts, follows Buffett’s May cancelation of a show in South Carolina to get treatment for an undisclosed illness. “Jimmy passed away on the night of September 1st surrounded by his family, friends, music and dogs,” the early Saturday morning (Sept. 2) post reads. “He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so…
Journalists attending the Meg 2: The Trench’s press screening were given a voucher good for a “Sharktastic Cocktail” at the theater’s lobby bar. The last time I can recall a studio plying critics with booze before a screening was Cats — and when that realization dawned on me, it set an expectation of bizarre awfulness for Meg 2 that the film never quite reached. Oh sure, Meg 2 is bad, but not in the surreal WTF-am-I-seeing? way that Cats is bad. Meg 2 is the more typical, more conventional, less entertaining sort of junk; the kind you’ll need more than one drink to enjoy. The first Meg wasn’t Jaws, but it wasn’t Jaws: The Revenge either. In fact, back…

What a nailbiter! One could envision a wildfire hitting Virgin River would be intense beyond measure, bringing all sorts of panic, drama, and heroic moments. And Virgin River Season 5 Episode 5 didn’t fall short on that in the least, with a gripping installment ending in a cliffhanger with a girl on the edge of her seat. Wildfires are terrifying, and we’ve unfortunately seen how destructive they can be far more frequently these days, so the notion of one touching down on the fictional ground of Virgin River elicited so many feelings. As expected, heroes emerged, and the community is…
In our modern era of larger, more destructive, and longer-lasting fires — called the Pyrocene — plants and animals are evolving quickly to survive. By synthesizing the wide body of research about rapid animal evolution in response to fire in a review publishing in Trends in Ecology & Evolution on July 19, a multidisciplinary team of ecology experts hopes to leverage what we already know to help foster evolution-informed conservation plans. In this way, they suggest, we can try to harness the ways in which fire impacts animals to protect vulnerable species — working with evolution instead of against it.…
Heatwave or no heatwave, white dresses make for the ideal summer attire. On cooler days, experiment by layering short-sleeved styles over a non-seasonal piece, such as a Breton or a block-coloured tee, and under a trending jacket, such as an oversized blazer. However, on the days when the weather plays ball, all you need to round off a chic white-dress look is a pair of chunky sandals, minimal jewellery and whichever handbag takes your fancy. (We recommend one of the basket variety.)Whether you opt for mini, midi or maxi, relaxed or fitted, pretty or pared back, I’ve found 25 of the best white summer dresses…
Of course, generative AI tools are the talk of the security industry this year. And Microsoft is no exception. In fact, since 2018, the company has had an AI red team that attacks AI tools to find vulnerabilities and help prevent them from behaving badly.Outside of Black Hat and Defcon coverage, we detailed the ins and outs of the data privacy that HIPPA provides people in the US, and explained how to use Google’s new “Results About You” tool to get your personal information removed from search results. But that’s not all. Each week, we round up the security news that…
As a guest on Steve-O’s Wild Ride podcast, Corey Taylor named Alice in Chains as the best live band.Corey Taylor on Backing TracksThe question was asked after Taylor offered his take on the backing track dilemma, where he explains that he feels that relying on tracks is “fucking mechanical,” leaving the performance with “no vibe” and “no heart.” Instead, he prefers the more human element of a show and that he will sometimes blank on a lyric early in the song, prompting the band to start it over again. “At that point, that’s all you can do. And it lets people…
Hamilton fans who have been patiently waiting for Lin-Manuel Miranda’s next Broadway musical may finally get … The Warriors.Miranda is reportedly working on a musical version of the classic ’70s New York action film by Walter Hill, which was in turn based on a novel by Sol Yurick. The movie version follows a Coney Island gang named the Warriors as they are framed for the murder of another powerful gang leader, and must fight to return to their home turf in Brooklyn. Along the way, they encounter even more colorful gangs like the Baseball Furies. The New York Post claims its “sundown-to-sunrise story — which spans Manhattan,…
Credit: Public Domain The management of working capital—or a firm’s current assets minus its current liabilities—aids organizations in making efficient use of their existing assets and maximizing cash flow. The relationship between efficient working capital management and firm performance can be complex due to globally dispersed supply chains, number of suppliers and product variety, and technological uncertainty, among other factors. New research from the University of Notre Dame shows that information technology represents a critical investment that firms must make in order to make informed, objective and firm-specific working capital decisions that would result in improved performance. “Impact of working…
A little earlier this summer, the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation announced its launching of a new initiative within its literacy program. The program, called Operation Turn the Page, will provide economically disadvantaged children with books and other educational resources to combat what’s known as “summer learning loss.” Summer learning loss is a phenomenon that involves disadvantaged children losing up to one-third of their educational progress from the previous grade year during summer break. This is because they don’t have access to books and other materials that would maintain their progress. Studies have found that 1 in 4 children grow…

The most advanced lab-made human embryo models look like the real thing — they resemble, though don’t perfectly replicate, natural embryos about 14 days into development. These lab-made embryo models open a window into the earliest stages of human development, when a fertilized egg first starts dividing and implants in the wall of the uterus. Researchers hope such models will be useful for studying birth defects that emerge early in development, reasons pregnancies can fail at this stage, and how drug exposures affect developing embryos. The team behind these embryo-like spheres of cells is led by Jacob Hanna, a stem cell…
Photography courtesy of Lauchmetrics.COM/SPOTLIGHT From mastering the “floating contour” trick to curl-proofing your claw clips. By Lauren Knowles Date August 24, 2023 “TikTok taught me!” is not a phrase I ever thought I’d use frequently. But, alas, it’s the plain truth — especially in the case of beauty tips and tricks. One month I’m learning how to makeup-proof my sunglasses and channel supermodel energy using blush, the next I’m hacking hat hair and braids in a breeze — all thanks to TikTok, of course. This month, I’ve been fixated on game-changing makeup techniques like “ombré concealer” and “floating contour.” Plus,…

He had no comment on the recent lawsuit but said Roblox was built with safety and civility at the forefront.San Mateo, Calif.-based Roblox is deploying bots to patrol user-generated games and press buttons to detect any dangerous content that players have disguised.”This is more like…

These days, our home planet of Earth is looking a little dire. Climate change and a wobbly economy (and the Pentagon finally admitting that aliens exist) are causing some of us to look to the stars and wonder what’s out there, and if it could possibly be better than what we have going on down here. Movies like Avatar imagine lush extraterrestrial environments full of fantastical creatures and fascinating local inhabitants that seem like great places to take a quick vacation on, if only they existed. But the jungle moon of Pandora is an outlier: most science fiction takes place on…
