We’re currently experiencing a heatwave in the UK, so we’re well and truly in what feels like the thick of summer. Even trench coats have fallen by the wayside, paving the way for light ensembles and one to two-piece outfits at best.Although many people enjoy bundling up to autumn, summer is my favourite season for fashion. Hot temperatures call for simplicity as layers are shed and the crux of an outfit becomes the focal centrepiece. It makes styling intentional and fuss-free. As a dress person, I appreciate the…

Jimmy Buffett ably summed up his catalog with the title of his 1992 box set — Boats, Beaches, Bars & Ballads. But that cuts broader, and deeper, than many realize. Buffett’s prevailing image, of course, was of floral shirts and Hawaiian leis, summer concert parties and fans with parrots on their shoulders and sharks, or at least fins, on their heads. And cheeseburgers on a paradise of tailgate grills. He also pioneered lifestyle branding, turning his tunes into an inclusive universe that includes restaurants, casinos, beer, real estate, radio and even a form of social media well before Mark Zuckerberg took…

There was a time not that long ago that a comic book fan would endure whatever superhero slop Hollywood produced and respond with “Please sir, I want some more.” Maybe once a decade a studio would release something of merit. In between it was all Judge Dredds and  and Fantastic Fours so bad they were never officially screened in any legitimate format. Those were rough years. These days, the standards have changed. Back then, it was considered a victory if a movie superhero looked vaguely like the character from the comics and the people involved didn’t openly mock graphic novels while publicizing their films. These days, Marvel and DC regularly produce…

A research group from the Nagoya University Graduate School of Medicine in Japan has identified the neural pathways in the brain that influence thermoregulatory behaviors in rats. These findings, published in the Journal of Neuroscience, provide a better understanding of the neural network of the brain, and also suggest new medical strategies for the prevention of heatstroke. All animals, including humans, use thermoregulatory behaviors to maintain body temperature within certain limits, even when the surrounding temperature is very different. Strategies…

Nusantara by Tom Quinn In my reviews I’ve often made reference to Tom Clancy, the father of military thrillers whose name has become a pop-culture shortcut for discussions about high-tech weaponry, espionage heroes and sinister plots to take down nations. Despite his death in 2013, his legacy lives on, with over 100 million copies of his books still in print and some such as The Hunt for Red October and Patriot Games even being given the Hollywood treatment. I’m hard-pressed to make comparisons to Tom Clancy, as I consider that one of the greatest honors a thriller novel can receive.…

One of the most common and practically useful experiments in all of fluid dynamics involves holding an object in air or submerging it fully underwater, exposing it to a steady flow to measure its resistance in the form of drag. Studies on drag resistance have led to technological advances in airplane and vehicle design and even advanced our understanding of environmental processes. That’s much tougher these…
