It’s been a minute since I’ve stepped foot in a store, but recently, my TikTok algorithm (which knows me frighteningly well) served up a few trending fashion picks from the brand’s website. Welcome to Today in Books, our daily round-up of literary headlines at the intersection of politics, culture, media, and more. For More Than a 100 Years, More Fiction Was Written by Men Than Women We haven’t linked to much (any?) of it here, but there has been another bout of “what about the fellas?” when it comes to books. This has come and going quite a bit in the last 5-10 years. This deep historical survey was passed around recently to show just how female-heavy novel writing was, and then wasn’t, over the novel’s lifespan. This paper ends in 2018,…

Fossilized bite marks suggest there could have been a dramatic tussle between a gigantic terror bird and an even more massive crocodile around 12 million years ago.Phorusrhacids, commonly known as “terror birds,” were apex predators that terrorized prey in the ancient ecosystems of South America. While these flightless carnivores had little to fear on land, a new study, published Tuesday (July 22) in the journal Biology Letters, indicates that they weren’t necessarily safe around water.Researchers analyzed tooth marks on the leg bone of one of the largest terror birds ever discovered — estimated to have stood more than 9 feet…

The FOMO is going to be very real and very hard for anyone who doesn’t happen to be headed to the Lido this year to sample the delectable delights of the annual Venice Film Festival. One upshot of the Cannes beef with Netflix is that all the streamer’s heavy-hitters tend to come later in the year, right at the door to the vaunted and ever-extending awards season corridor. And this year, it seems as if they’ve got a number of major titles competing against one another in the big race for the Golden Lion (won last year by Pedro Almodovar for The…

Shri rapax fossilRoyal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences, Brussels A new species of Velociraptor-like dinosaur from the Gobi desert in Mongolia had giant claws and exceptionally thickset hands, which may have enabled it to take down larger prey. The name of the species, Shri rapax, was inspired by “the rapacious features we see in the hand”, says Andrea Cau, an unaffiliated paleontologist based in Italy. Shri rapax measures around 2 metres long and comes from the Djadochta Formation, which was a land of sprawling sand dunes and intermittent lakes between 75 and 71 million years ago. It was unearthed in…

Credit: Kampus Production from Pexels It has long been established that emotions reflect in our voice—this helps us communicate more purposefully and gives listeners cues as to how they should interpret what we say. But what emotions predominate in complaints—and how do they differ between groups? Researchers in Switzerland and Canada investigated and published their findings in Frontiers in Communication. “Complaining is differentiated from neutral speech by changes in vocal expression. Complainers tend to change their intonation, pitch, rhythm, and emphasis, making them sound more emotive and expressive,” said first author Dr. Maël Mauchand, a neuroscientist at the Swiss Center…

These days, Marvel is one of the most famous brands in all of popular culture. Its characters are literally world famous. There’s hardly a soul alive on this planet who doesn’t know Spider-Man or the X-Men or Iron Man.That’s these days. But in the decades between the rise of Marvel in the early 1960s and the birth of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the late 2000s, the company and its characters were not viewed as entertainment-industry juggernauts. NASA is testing new scalable satellite technology to integrate and launch scientific sensors faster and at lower cost. NASA’s Athena EPIC (Economical Payload Integration Cost) mission uses a compact, modular spacecraft platform that “shares resources among the payloads onboard” so each instrument doesn’t need its own control system. By offloading routine functions to the bus, this architecture promises “lower costs to taxpayers and a quicker path to launch”. Langley leads the project, which will fly as a SpaceX rideshare in mid-2025 to test the concept in orbit. It could expedite deployment of climate and weather sensors and accelerate future missions.Scalable…

I was not sure what to expect from Diadem’s new BluCore paddle, which is among a handful of new paddles that have replaced the standard honeycomb polymer core with closed-cell foam—they sent me a sample of the stuff, and it looks like you could make a gas station cooler out of it. That foam is substantially more durable—it has a lifetime warranty, in fact—over the long haul and is also not at risk of delaminating in extreme temperatures if, for example, you leave the paddle in the car on a scorching summer day while you grab patio margs.Given how far…

Nematode worms can learn to prefer plastic-contaminated prey over cleaner foodHeiti Paves/Alamy Predators can learn to prefer eating prey that is contaminated with microplastics, even when clean food is available. This behaviour could have implications for the eating habits and health of entire ecosystems, including humans. Researchers discovered this preference for plastic after studying the eating habits of small roundworms called nematodes (Caenorhabditis elegans) over several generations. When offered their usual diet of bacteria, as well as the same microbes contaminated with microplastics, the first generation of nematodes opted for the cleaner alternative. However, exposure to plastic-laced food over multiple…
