Interview with Irene Lawless, Author of Cherry on Top

master mentalism tricks

What’s the story behind the story? What inspired you to write Cherry on Top?

My husband, daughter, and I took an impromptu road trip to Montana in August 2020 – an escape from the insanity of that year. On our way to Glacier National Park, we drove along the eastern side of Flathead Lake and stopped at a small roadside stand on a cherry orchard.

While munching on the sweetest cherries I had ever tasted, I knew I’d found the perfect setting for a romance novel. I wanted to write a story for Zach, who had been introduced in Montana Sunrise, and suddenly had a place for him. Chloe soon followed.

If you had to pick theme songs for the main characters of Cherry on Top, what would they be?

There was so much growth for Chloe in this book. Kacey Musgrave’s Butterflies seemed to personify her journey with Zach. He really brought out the best in her.

What’s your favorite genre to read? Is it the same as your favorite genre to write?

I truly love all romance genres, but paranormal romance is probably my favorite. I love to write contemporary, usually western or straight contemporary with a paranormal twist.

What books are on your TBR pile right now?

There are so many on that list at this moment, but really it’s anything by Juliette Cross, Lucy Score, or Sherilee Gray for now.

What scene in your book was your favorite to write?

I think I laughed the entire time I was writing the book signing scene in the final chapter. It was so much fun to have Chloe face her demons, while all her friends and family were supporting her in an interventionist sort of way.

Do you have any quirky writing habits? (lucky mugs, cats on laps, etc.)

I’m very routine oriented and need a designated quiet writing space to get the creative juices flowing. At home, it’s my desk, cluttered with grammar reference books, various glass hearts, and good luck charms. It’s where I’ve done my best work.

Do you have a motto, quote, or philosophy you live by?

When your goals seem overwhelming, focus on baby steps. Any forward progress is forward progress. Stick to it and you’ll achieve your goals before you know it.

If you could choose one thing for readers to remember after reading your book, what would it be?

After reading Cherry on Top, I want my readers to know that romance is real and true love really does exist.
