Netflix’s Maharaja Ending Explained & Spoilers

Maharaja, Vijay Sethupati’s 50th film as a lead actor, was released on June 14, 2024. Directed by Nithilan Swaminathan, the action-thriller garnered a positive response from the audiences and critics. Moreover, its recent digital premiere on Netflix on July 12 created a second wave of buzz, with fans sharing their opinions on social media. For viewers who haven’t watched Maharaja yet and are curious about how it ends, here’s everything you need to know.

    Maharaja ending spoilers

In the climax scene, Maharaja confronts Selvam. This leads to a dramatic and emotional conclusion of the movie. The former is initially surprised to encounter the latter, recalling their interactions in the past. However, things soon escalate as the duo fight each other. It culminates when Maharaja strikes Selvam on the leg with a large stone, and incapacitates him.

Later, Maharaja’s daughter Jyothi arrives at the scene and questions Selvam about his actions towards her. In a poignant moment, she throws jewelry in front of him and leaves. Suddenly, Selvam finds a locket in the jewelry, which he had brought for his daughter before going to jail. Upon noticing a mark on Jyothi’s shoulder that matches the one his daughter had, he realizes that she is his long-lost daughter.

Overwhelmed with guilt and remorse for his past deeds, Selvam’s self-hatred intensifies. In a tragic turn, he falls from the top of a building, resulting in his demise.

    Who is Lakshmi?

The film begins with the protagonist, Maharaja as a humble barber. The scene then shifts to another sequence where he is buying toys for his newborn. However, unexpectedly, a large truck hits his house while his wife and the child are inside. As the story progresses through time, starting from a school where Jyothi, Maharaja’s daughter, is introduced as an average student academically but excelling in sports. While most teachers are irritated by her, her PT teacher, Aasifa supports and cares for her.

As the story unfolds, it is revealed that Jyothi’s mother has passed away, and she lives with her father and Lakshmi (a steel dustbin). During the truck accident that destroyed their house, a steel dustbin fell on Jyothi, protecting and saving her life. Since then, it became a member of their family as Lakshmi. Every Friday, the father and daughter duo bathe Lakshmi and apply vermilion to it as a sign of respect and gratitude.

One day, Jyothi leaves home for a few days to participate in a school sports competition. That night, three thieves break into their house, attack Maharaja, and steal Lakshmi. Injured and desperate, he goes to the police station to report the theft. Initially, the police consider him crazy and throw him out when he explains that a dustbin has been stolen. Later, the inspector arrives and listens to his story. But, upon learning that Lakshmi is a dustbin, he too dismisses Maharaja and hurls him away from the station.

Were the Police able to find Lakshmi?

Upon persuading the police, Maharaja promised to give them ₹7 lakh (about $8381) if they found Lakshmi. Motivated by greed, the inspector starts searching vigorously. Initially, they considered making a duplicate dustbin to give to Maharaja. However, during their investigation, they discovered that he was actually searching for three people, one of whom he had already killed.

Further investigation revealed a shocking twist: on the night of the theft, Jyothi had returned from her school competition earlier than expected. Instead of Maharaja, the three intruders had assaulted her, leaving her almost dead before exiting. It soon became apparent that one of the three culprits was a policeman named Nallasivam. The Inspector devised a plan and convinced the latter to take the blame for Lakshmi’s theft.

The next day, they went to Maharaja’s house. There, Nallasivam confessed to stealing Lakshmi. In a surprising turn, the inspector handed a weapon to Maharaja, urging him to take revenge for his daughter. They then provided him the address of the third accused, Selvam.

After that, a fierce confrontation ensues between Maharaja and Selvam. The latter sought revenge against the former, believing that it was his fault that he had gone to jail and lost his wife and daughter. After the fight, Selvam realized that the girl he had wronged was his own daughter, Jyothi. Overcome with shame and guilt, he took his own life, bringing the story to a poignant and emotional conclusion.
