This article appears through BookTrib’s partnership with Tall Poppy Writers. Ann Garvin shares the real-life experiences that inspired her new novel, Bummer Camp, and recommends two books that relish in the same summer camp nostalgia.
I was a nurse at a camp for sight-impaired and hearing-impaired kids with a variety of abilities. I adored my time at camp, having only had one overnight experience as a Girl Scout ages ago. I wrote Bummer Camp because of the adventures and bonds I formed during that sleepaway summer. On September 1, Bummer Camp will be published, in which two polar opposite sisters work to save their childhood camp in the midst of a lot of very nervous people.
The camp, nestled in the heart of the woods, became a character itself, shaping and influencing the journey of each camper just as much as the counselors and friends they meet along the way. Kate Spencer and Ali Brady shared their love of summer camps with their new books, and we came together to describe our books through a series of fun questions.
These books are endearing and hopeful stories filled with the excitement of new beginnings and the thrill of outdoor adventures. They also offer a touch of nostalgia, reminding us of our summers spent around campfires, swimming in lakes, and sleeping under the stars.
